My Glyph PortaGig hard drive won’t mount on the desktop of my Mac when I plug it into a USB 2 port. The firewire connection works fine. What’s up?

We have seen some cases where the USB2 ports on your Mac don’t provide enough power to the PortaGig drive. When plugged into an underpowered USB port, the Activity light on the drive will usually blink and the drive will attempt to mount on the Mac, but its icon never shows up on the Desktop and you are unable to access the files on the drive.

There are a couple of solutions for this problem. If you have a free Firewire port, you can connect the drive to this port; however, if you’re using a lot of other Firewire devices (especially audio interfaces), this could potentially cause bandwidth issues. You can also use the specialized USB cable that Glyph provides with the PortaGig drive that allows it to connect to two USB ports simultaneously. This will provide adequate power to the drive at the expense of an additional USB port.

Another solution is to use the power supply that Glyph makes for the PortaGig drive. Talk to your Sales Engineer if you’re interested in purchasing this power supply.
