DVD-RAM and archiving with Tascam’s MX-2424
“I’ve seen a few pictures of Tascam’s MX-2424 system showing a DVD-RAM drive installed, yet I’ve recently discovered that it does not come with any device in that slot. Can you really get it with a DVD-RAM drive, and if so, which mechanism?”
Many early photos showed a DVD-RAM drive in the unit (including the photo in our 2000 New Gear Directory). Tascam was most likely trying to differentiate their product and make it clear that there are some excellent archiving options available for the machine since this is always one of the first questions to come up when talking about hard disk recording. To be clear, the stock MX-2424 has no mechanism in that front slot. It does come with a built in 9 gig drive and SCSI, so it’s easy to expand on that.As for DVD-RAM, it is an excellent archiving solution for the MX-2424. We can easily install a drive for you, or if you want to do it yourself that’s fine too. The compatibility list is pretty short right now. Only one drive is approved: the Hitachi GF1050, using Panasonic media. It is possible that other mechanisms will work, but Tascam has not approved them so experiment at your own risk. Tascam is working on a software update that will support more drives.
