Continuous Controllers With Kurzweils

We’ve seen a few variations on the following question from Kurzweil users: “Is it possible on my Kurzweil to assign Continuous Controller Pedal 1 to control volume for all programs without editing the programs individually?”

For the answer we went to our Directory of Soundware Engineering and general Kurzweil guru, Daniel Fisher.Yes, there is an easier way but it’s different for K2000’s and K2500’s.

K2000
Go to the MIDI:XMIT Page and change the “CPedal:” parameter from “Foot” (CC#4) to “Volume” (CC#7). You can just type 7 Enter.

K2500/K2600
Go to the Setup Mode and edit #97 Control Setup.
Go to the CPEDAL Page and change the “CPedal1:” Destination from “Foot” (CC#4) to “Volume” (CC#7). You can just type 7 Enter.
Now make sure that you save this Setup back to #97 (not #200) since #97 is, by default, the Setup that determines how the Programs will respond to Controllers (although this can be changed in the MIDI: XMIT Page).

If you want to get fancy you can experiment with Scale, Add, and Curve values to get precisely the pedal response you’d like.
Keep in mind that doing this to either your K2000 or K2500 will mean that you need to keep your Foot Controller plugged in all the time as removing it will make that Channel silent (CC#7 = 0).
Also, be aware that the Pedal only works on one MIDI Channel at a time (whichever Channel you’re on). By looking at the MIDI:CHNLS Page you’ll be able to tell what’s going on more clearly by watching the Volume values move. If you really need to modulate the Volume of *all* 16 MIDI Channels at once, I’d recommend that you simply get an analog stereo volume pedal. Attempting to send continuous CC#7 commands across 16 Channels simultaneously will quickly clog your MIDI pipeline.
