Boss BR1600CD says “CD drive updater, waiting for disc” and won’t do anything, it won’t even power off
Here is the OTHER reason: Roland accidentally shipped out about 50 units that had updated firmware but no installed OS, most of which they thought went to G.C. but we have seen at least one of them.
Customers can follow directions to simply download & burn the OS as seen below (or in previous article) or can call Roland to have one sent.
You can also spin it that they can get the latest OS, with some enhancements over what was supposed to be installed when this snafoo happened, the current OS is 2.0, released in April of 2005.
Also, just a few of these units (2 or 3) shipped with the wrong firmware. If the bottom of the CD drive on the bottom of the unit is smooth, then there’s no problem, but if it’s bumpy and full of 100s of small holes, it will also need a firmware update.

This means the OS on the BR1600 is either missing or corrupt. You will need to reload the OS. You can download the latest OS from Roland’s website, type BR-1600 in the search at the top of the page, and then go to the download link.
The downloaded file will need to be burned to CD with a program that can read .prg image files, Roland’s website has a link to a free program which will do this.
Then, once the image is burned to CD, simply inserting the CD when it asks the question will load the OS onto the machine.
