Powerful, compact mixer
If you have line-level needs and are looking for a small-format mixer to take charge of them, you've come to the right place! The Mackie U.420 offers four stereo line channels, complete with 3-band active EQ. Plus, you can use the first channel in mono with your guitar or bass - it actually acts as a DI box, so incorporating instruments into your setup is no sweat. Plus, there's an RIAA phono preamp so you can hook up your turntables, and a convenient FireWire output (in addition to stereo main and aux outputs) so you can get recording straightaway.
Great recording and performance tool
With a FireWire output onboard, there's no doubt the U.420 is an excellent recording tool. What you may not know just from looking at it, is that it has features built into it to compensate for latency. Its headphone output is wired before the main volume knob that controls your main monitors - so if you turn down your monitors, and turn up your headphones you can easily overdub. And, when you play live through the analog inputs, and mix within software, everything will blend at the main output - but there's also a clever FireWire "loop-thru" button. When engaged, it routes all of your inputs, as well as the feed from your DAW right back to the computer, so you can simultaneously record a live stereo mix of your set. And, if that's not enough, the U.420 also comes with a copy of Tracktion 3 music production software.
Makes an excellent keyboard submixer
Of course, with its four stereo line inputs, the U.420 makes a stellar keyboard submixer, giving you all the intuitive controls you need to sculpt your sound with a stereo aux output for your monitors, and a main stereo out for the PA.
