The Classic Roland TD Series Is New Again

New pads, a new module, and a whole new world of functionality take the Roland TD316 well past its reasonable price point and straight into professional territory. First, the V31 sound module features the same sound engine as Roland's flagship V71, as well as its onboard Wi-Fi, which makes downloading new sounds easier than ever before. What’s more, you can import your own sounds via an SDHC slot (SD card sold separately) to craft wild custom kits or borrow a couple of studio-quality artist signature kits by using your new 6-month Roland Cloud Ultimate subscription. Finally, the pads are a combination of old classics and cutting-edge designs, sporting thin CY-12C-T and CY-14R-T cymbals, a time-tested KD-10 kick tower, an expressive VH-10 hi-hat pad, three new PD-H Standard series tom pads, and a new PD-P Premium series snare pad. You also get Roland’s MDS-COM2 drum rack, so you can set up and start playing in no time.

Meet the V31 module

The most realistic drum sounds available

DW Soundworks represents a revolutionary virtual instrument designed to provide creators with authentic drum sounds. Offering a comprehensive collection of drum sounds that cater to a wide array of musical styles and genres, DW Soundworks is an invaluable resource for drummers, producers, and songwriters. With its ability to serve as a virtual studio instrument (VST) and as a drum sample library inside digital audio workstations (DAWs) for creating acoustic drum tracks, DW Soundworks is a go-to solution for musicians looking to incorporate high-quality drum sounds into their productions. The V31 module features the same sounds and expansions as Roland's top-of-the-line V71 module in a compact, streamlined design.

Keep it fresh

With the Roland Cloud Connect mobile app and the included Roland Cloud Ultimate membership, your V31 module will always stay up to date. First, the Roland Cloud Connect app works in conjunction with the V31's onboard Wi-Fi to install sounds directly from your iOS/Android mobile device. This setup enables seamless wireless connectivity, making it easy to update and expand your V31's sound library without needing a computer. Second, the Roland Cloud Ultimate membership is the highest tier of Roland's subscription service, providing access to an extensive library of Roland's iconic sounds, including synthesizers, drum machines, and other instruments. Finally, the companion V31 Editor software and enhanced V-Edit tools will help you craft your own unique sonic signature from studio to stage.

V-Drums software editor

One of Roland’s most frequently requested features for its V-Drums has been a software-based editor. Well, now it’s here! Simply jump on Roland Cloud, where you’ll find it as a free download. Your instrument changes are instantly reflected in both the module and editor software, and the module’s audio processing tools are accessible as well, allowing you to shape tones with a similar workflow to music production software. The ability to alter your V31's sounds using a larger computer screen with mouse control is indeed a very welcome addition.

Kick pedal and hi-hat stand are not included.

Craft a custom kit

In addition to the vast collection of preset drum kits, the V31 module allows you to import your own WAV sounds via SD card (sold separately) to build your own instrument or integrate a specific sample into a preset kit. From lo-fi percussion samples to full-length audio loops, the V31’s customization possibilities are endless.

Simplify your recording setup

If you’re building up a home studio, an electronic drum kit is just about the easiest way to lay down your drum tracks — no mics, interface, or excessive noise required. The V31 module effortlessly outputs multitrack audio to your DAW via a single USB-C cable for near-silent recording of studio-quality beats. Plus, with a MIDI Out connection, the V31 allows you to retrack or trigger parts using virtual instruments within your DAW. Lastly, the L/R Stereo outputs are must-have features for performing musicians who regularly hook up their set to a PA mixer.

Expand your potential

While the TD316 comes with just about everything a drummer could ever want, we more than understand the never-ending need to tinker and build upon your setup. Fortunately, Roland includes two extra auxiliary trigger inputs on the V31 sound module, plus a Digital Pad input to easily expand and upgrade your kit. Furthermore, the V31's coaching tools will take your accuracy, speed, and endurance to heights you never thought possible. Roland classics like Time Check and Quiet Count are onboard, as well as the brand-new Phrase Trainer, Stroke Monitor, and aptly named Blast Beat Builder. Spend some time with these features, and it won't be long before the trickiest of beats and fills become second nature.

Bluetooth MIDI and song streaming

The TD316’s built-in Bluetooth transceiver is sure to elevate your practice and recording sessions. Music can be streamed directly from your device to the module, allowing you to practice with your favorite grooves and fills. If you prefer connecting to a wired external device, then no problem! The V31 features a 3.5mm Mix In input for that as well.

Plenty of pads

PD-12P snare pad

For your backbeat, Roland has adorned the TD316 with a Premium series PD-12P pad. This next-gen pad sports a multi-zone design for a nuanced response that captures your strikes across the head and rim. Additionally, Roland has equipped it with a genuine die-cast hoop and a dazzling chrome finish for a truly authentic look and feel.

KD-10 kick pad

Looking for a kick pad with the feedback of a traditional acoustic head? The tower-style KD-10 kick pad delivers exceptionally organic playability, capturing every nuance of your playing dynamics. A combination of a rock-solid frame and anchoring spurs keeps the KD-10 firmly in place, allowing you to stomp out even the most aggressive of double-bass blast beats with impunity.

VH-10 hi-hat

Mount this advanced 12-inch hi-hat pad to your favorite hi-hat stand (not included) using the included clutch and trigger base, and the VH-10 rewards you with realistic pumps, splashes, and closed-to-open contrast. Its dual-trigger system is able to capture nuances that many other electronic drum kits miss. And its textured playing surface reduces acoustic volume to keep practice and performances quiet.

What else is included?

  • PD-H tom pads (x3): Roland's PD-H Standard series pads make up the toms for your TD316 kit. These tunable, mesh-headed drum pads flaunt delightfully lifelike rebound and snappiness that promise performance realism on par with the highly detailed tones of your V-Drums module. Engineered for remarkable durability thanks to hard-plastic hoops with an inset rubber rim, the Standard series of Roland V-Pads is ready to welcome performances and playing styles of virtually any intensity with ease. To boot, the Standard series comes finished in a traditional black scheme that will seamlessly blend into your V-Drums set with a sleek, no-nonsense energy, from apartment practice settings to small stage spaces.
  • CY-12C-T (x2) and CY-14R-T cymbals: This generation of Roland V-Drums features thinner, more sensitive CY-14R-T ride and CY-12C-T crash cymbals than previous generations. In addition to their new low profile, these cymbals offer a choke control that functions just like a traditional cymbal — just grab the edge! The CY-12C-T crash sports a trigger point on both the bow and edge, while the CY-14R-T ride is designed with 3-way independent triggering on the bow, edge, and bell for a wide variety of configuration options.

Keep your setup solid

This set comes equipped with Roland’s rock-solid MDS-COM2 compact drum rack, so you can set up your kit safely and securely. It’s a favorite stand among Sweetwater percussionists for its sheer durability, but the included boom arms and easy-positioning mounts for the toms/snare certainly don’t hurt either! Nonslip rubber feet keep the MDS-COM2 rooted firmly to the ground, allowing you to go all-out without fear of your set slipping and shifting around. A multi-pin trigger harness, module mount, power supply, and smartphone tray complete the MDS-COM2, providing an incredible level of utility and reliability.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Awesome E-set
If I had the budget for the TD516 I would have gotten that because I wanted the separate snare and upgraded hi-hat BUT this TD316 will do, and it is doing a great job for personal use! Many features to fine tune your drum samples and the module produces such realistic acoustic sounds. The stand is very sturdy and the mesh pads are much better than their older mesh pads. Upgraded from a Alesis Nitro Mesh; day and night difference! Civic to Porche in comparison.

Still getting used to all the features( going to take awhile) but so far the only gripe I have is you will need a USB 2.0 to C converter if you will connect to a pc/laptop that doesn't have a C input. When you switch to the module's USB 'generic' driver you will have to restart the module each time switching from 'vendor/generic' drivers. This allows you to play the source through your module using headphones or speakers. Speaking of headphones I was using Audio Technica M20X but upgraded to the ATH M50X. Much deeper bass and great sound to use with drum e-kits!!

Overall love this e-drum kit!
You get a lot with this kit.

I started drumming an Alesis Nitro kit a little over a year ago. I have come a long way, but there was so much about that kit that was holding me back. The small pads, the lack of a ride bell, the pedal only high-hat control made learning harder and less fun. The investment here is a big one, going from a kit I picked up for $ Roland kit that I had been researching. I knew it was a big upgrade, but I was still worried I'd feel buyer's remorse due to the price tag. My goal was to get a kit that felt significantly closer to an acoustic kit. This one check all those boxes. It was between this and the Alesis Strata Core, but my research made me settle on the Roland kit. The kit has more than enough features to keep me satisfied for years.

Music background: Beginner Drummer
This kit is amazing!
This is my first Roland electronic drum kit, and as someone who has played acoustic drums for years, I'm seriously impressed. The mesh heads feel incredibly natural, giving me a realistic rebound and response that I didn't think an electronic kit could match. The playability is smooth, comfortable, and surprisingly close to the real thing.

The sound module is packed with high-quality, customizable kits that feel dynamic and expressive. Whether I'm practicing quietly with headphones or running it through an amp, everything sounds clean and professional. The build quality is solid, setup was simple, and every pad reacts exactly how I want it to.

For anyone coming from an acoustic background, this kit makes the transition effortless. Roland absolutely delivers on quality and feel. Easily a 5-star purchase — highly recommend!
Excellent kit
This kit is awesome. I sold my TD17KVX2 to upgrade to this and have no regrets after playing this new one. Size-wise it feels about the same as my TD17 did, so it feels familiar. I like how the rack is a little wider in the middle brackets and has more room to move the bass pad around. The snare pad on this kit is great and in conjunction with the module feels very dynamic. The module feels like a huge upgrade over the TD17 so far - it's very user friendly, has a nice interface, and the sounds are excellent.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
