The OD Pedal Nashville Session Pros Use

The Nobels ODR-1 is not another "green" overdrive clone. In fact, it sounds nothing like the ubiquitous green stompbox. A cult classic among Nashville session players, the ODR-1 is a natural-sounding dirt box that fits sonically somewhere between the mythical transparent overdrive and the aforementioned mid-forward green pedal. This pedal boasts a 3-knob control set with Drive, Spectrum, and Level knobs. Drive and Level are self-explanatory; however, the Spectrum knob offers something different. Rather than operating as a typical tone control, Spectrum enables you to simultaneously dial in your bass and treble without affecting your mids. The result is extremely transparent, and it flatters any amp you plug the pedal into. You also get a bass-cut switch, a remote input jack, 18-volt power compatibility, and glow-in-the-dark knobs. With its ability to tackle light harmonic coloration, blues-like grit, and hard-rock crunch with equal aplomb, the Nobels ODR-1 Natural Overdrive is the secret to the coveted Nashville session sound.

Powerful 3-knob control set

The ODR-1 Natural Overdrive features a trio of knobs: Drive, Spectrum, and Level. Like other dirt boxes, Drive controls the amount of saturation — the ODR-1 is capable of everything from subtle coloration to tube-ish grit to muscular crunch. Level adjusts the output of the pedal. This is the knob you'd use to goose your amp. The Spectrum knob it where the magic lies: this control enables you to cut or boost your bass and treble — simultaneously. Want to take your single-coil-equipped guitar from chickin'-pickin' clean into humbucker-esque fatness? Cranking this knob will do it. Best of all, the Spectrum control leaves your midrange untouched to maintain a natural, transparent sound.

A bevy of pro-tailored extras

The Nobels ODR-1 is packed with professional-focused extras. The stompbox's bass-cut switch tames your sub-bass frequencies — a feature bassists and humbucker aficionados will certainly appreciate. A remote input jack allows the pedal to be switched on and off remotely. If you employ a complex rig like most pros do, remote operation is a must-have feature. You can also run the ODR-1 at 18 volts for added headroom. The guitarists here at Sweetwater also value this pedal's glow-in-the-dark knobs. The ODR-1's versatility lends it to lots of tweaking, and these easy-to-see knobs make doing so in dark studios and on dimly lit stages stress-free. To top it off, this stompbox boasts low current consumption, a quick-change overhead battery compartment, and a rugged metal housing.

Reviews

Life got easier
I have been thinking about getting this pedal fora while. Finally I pulled the trigger and glad I did. I have chased my sound for a long time. I own several very good overdrive pedals that do a good job. But the Nobels gave me everything
I needed. It doesn't color my guitar tone it just
makes it sound bigger and adds that bit of break up. This pedal keeps me from trying to squeeze the tone out of
My guitar. It allows me to relax and be creative.

Smooth And Rich
Absolutely my favorite OD pedal. Smooth, creamy, rich and full sounding, I could go on forever with the adjectives.
As a clean boost, it adds tons of presence and fills the room. It has a beautifully smooth overdrive when dimed but when pushed with a compressor or another OD (I use an EHX Soul Food), it definitely gets into medium distortion territory. Imagine turning a clean Fender amp into a vintage Marshall with a Greenback speaker, the Nobles ODR-1 does that and more. It can be aggressive but never harsh. It CANT be harsh, even if that's what you want. If harshly aggressive is what you're after (and there are genuine uses for that) then this might not be your pedal.
The Contour knob is a very interesting feature, it controls the highs and lows simultaneously while leaving the mids alone and also behaves like an EQ pedal in that it boosts or cuts those frequencies which will affect your volume.
The Bass Cut is very useful as well. Generally, I leave the bass on with single coils and use the cut with humbuckers.
Finally, the Nobels ODR-1 is the smoothest and most musical sounding OD I've ever heard. Very pleasing to the ear. My pedalboard will never be without it.

Subtle but Huge
I'm using this with my Strymon Iridium, it's amazing the life it brings to my setup. The response to attack from a light touch to more aggressive goes from clean to that amp break up we all want. I bought two of these pedals one is set with very little Drive just less than 2, and the other the Drive is at 5/6. I use these for my live gigs we play a variety of Classic rock,80's New Country. I bought these to help me get a better Tone for the New Country, and found it helps my sound over all, I'm still learning the full extent of these pedals but I'm loving them already!!

Rich and Creamy
Very nice overdrive that truly feels and sounds transparent. It does retain the players articulation and dynamics. I switched the bass cut on and am using with 18v and absolutely love the clarity and responsiveness.

When I combine this with my other overdrive pedals it sounds awesome. I placed the ODR-1 last after other ODs to smooth out any harshness or fizz.

Sweetwater/ODR-1
I'm happy with my Nobels pedal, got it in good shape, packaged just right. My consultant, Alex Mattingly, has always done me right over the years. I haven't used the pedal enough to give a detailed review, but it's obviously got a plethora of tones in that box. Which includes clean with just a little richness/body, just the right amount of fatness to complement my guitar and amp. Thanks, Alex and Sweetwater.
