Sweet Signature Bass from Fender

Bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen is a true renaissance artist who has played with the likes of Beck, Nine Inch Nails, and Drake, among others. A dedicated bass player since the age of 14, "JMJ," as he is affectionately called by fans and music insiders alike, switched to the Fender Mustang Bass exclusively over a decade ago and has never looked back. Now Fender has partnered with JMJ to design the Fender Justin Meldal-Johnsen Road Worn Bass and bring it to the public. The Fender JMJRW is designed specifically to match the vintage ’67 Mustang Bass JMJ plays both on the road and in the studio. An alder body, maple "C" neck, and rosewood fretboard comprise the quality tonewoods for this killer bass. A single Custom Seymour Duncan Split Single-Coil pickup is featured and puts out thick, meaty low-end tone. Bass players here at Sweetwater have really fallen for this signature instrument from Fender and know you will too.

That amazing neck

The Fender JMJ Mustang features a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard that makes it smooth, fast, and comfortable. At 30", the JMJ Mustang scale is considerably shorter than a regular-sized bass, making it easier to move up and down the neck. Or, if you're into tapping like JMJ, this neck is great for that too. This shorter scale also means a more pronounced bottom end, slightly tighter top end, and a bit more scoop in the midrange. Whatever style you are playing, this classic "C"-shaped neck gives you options for exploration and variation in approach and attack.

Great pickup for awesome low-end tone

A single custom-spec split-coil Seymour Duncan pickup gives the JMJ Road Worn Mustang bass plenty of punch and power, providing excellent tone for live performance. Vintage black plastic Master Volume and Master Tone controls put you in the driver's seat for stylizing your own approach to laying down a rhythmic low end to any song. In addition, a rad 4-ply aged white Pearloid pickguard adds even more vibe and style to this already sweet bass.

Great worn look and vibe

Fender and JMJ have put all the details into this Mustang Bass to make it resemble the one JMJ plays. From the worn-through paint on the body to pick-nicks on the front, all the way to the aged hardware, the JMJ Mustang looks and feels road-worn and ready to play.

Fender Justin Meldal-Johnsen Mustang Bass Features:

  • Solid alder body for great low-end tone
  • "C"-shaped maple neck for comfort and playability
  • Custom Seymour Duncan split single-coil pickup puts out great low-end tone
  • 4-saddle Mustang Bass strings-through-body bridge
  • Road-worn appointments in style of JMJ '67 Mustang bass

Just buy it already.

I went to a music store and played it for about two minutes. The rep came in and said they were closing. I told him I liked the bass and wanted to play it a bit because I felt like I was going to buy it. He said it was closing time. So we left. My friend and I couldn't get the sound and feel from that bass out of our mind. After a few weeks, I just decided to buy it. But it was out of stock. It took a few more weeks until I saw there was one in stock on this site. So I instantly bought it, in blue, and received it a few days later. What a beauty. It's light. The flats are soft and have a great tone. And I never put it away. It stays plugged in next to the bed so I can just grab and play when I want to. I rotate this bass with my Rickenbacker 4003W for gigs.

Sorry for the long story. Just buy it! You won't regret it!!!

1. Light.
2. Sounds GREAT!
3. Strings have great feel and tone.
4. Looks great, not overly done.
5. Better than the other mustangs available.
Music background: 26 year bass player. I've been playing with my rock en espanol band for 20 years now.

Shouldn’t have waited so long.

I've considered Sweetwater a few times but always hated the idea of not playing something before buying it. Bad decision. This was my best guitar buying experience ever. I got a call from Matt after placing the order to confirm and set expectations for setup and shipping. Then got an email with a bunch of sick photos of the guitar. It came fast as hell and setup perfectly. Then I got another call from Matt after arrival to see how I liked it and just talk shop. Customer experience at Sweetwater is on another level.

Da Bass

This little guy holds its own in tone, comfort, and playability with my Stingray and my American Jazz.
Really fun to play and super solid for a MIM model.
Of course, my rep Matt Masek hooked me up, and you always know the guitar will be ready to go right when you get it.

I love this bass!

I've owned a few basses over the years, this bass is the best of the bunch. I absolutely love it! The sound is out of this world, and it looks stunning. I think the road worn effect or relicing is very well done. A vintage Fender bass is well out of my price range, but this bass looks, sounds & feels like the read deal. It's got Hipshot tuning machines and Seymour Duncan pickups. One of the sweetest Fender basses available. Get yours before they're gone!

An amazing bass

I have heard or seen about short scales for years. Well I am kind of a big guy..6 2" 218 so it may not be for me. Wrong!..This bass is so fun and cool to play. I dont play much on the highest part of the note range but even so tbe high notes are there. I played this recently at the studio and everyone loved it. I have LaBellsla flats on it and wow! I am playing it live soon and look forward to it. This is one of the coolest basses alive!
