Get Your Hands on a Golden-age Gibson

Inspired by the legendary Les Pauls of the late 1950s, Gibson’s Les Paul Standard ’50s Plain Top delivers all the best of golden-era Gibson tones, looks, and vibe. This guitar’s mahogany body and maple top deliver a one-two sonic punch of warmth and clarity, marked by the mammoth sustain that’s defined the Les Paul since 1952. Under the hood, two Burstbucker pickups brim with an open, airy, and dynamic PAF-style punch. Fans of a chunky neck will be sure to appreciate the old-school vibe of the mahogany neck’s ’50s Vintage profile, while the 12-inch-radius Indian rosewood fingerboard’s 22 frets are Plek’d to perfection. A thin nitrocellulose finish completes the package, allowing your guitar gracefully age and develop over time — just like Gibson’s original 1950s Les Pauls!

Full-feeling ’50s Vintage neck profile

Les Paul fanatics who prefer a chunky neck will find much to love in this guitar’s ’50s Vintage mahogany neck. Full, round, and not too substantial, the ’50s Vintage neck profile harkens back to the Les Paul’s earliest days, when baseball bat necks were the norm, not the exception. And while this guitar’s robust neck construction certainly dictates the instrument’s feel, many Sweetwater guitarists contend that a mammoth neck is key to the Les Paul’s prodigious sustain. It’s all topped off with a beautiful slab of Indian rosewood, then finished off with a classic 12-inch radius and acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays.

The power of the PAF

No other Gibson pickup boasts the pedigree of the PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucker, a pickup that set the humbucker standard upon its introduction in the late 1950s. The Les Paul Standard ’50s Plain Top’s Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 pickups offer an ultra-authentic sonic re-creation of the PAF, including an unpotted construction, Alnico II magnets, and a lower-output asymmetrical wind. The result? An open, airy, and articulate tone that captures all the warmth and dynamics you’d expect from a vintage humbucker, with an extra helping of crystal-clear note definition. Plus, while vintage Les Pauls had identical PAF pickups in both the neck and bridge, the Les Paul Standard ’50s Plain Top’s bridge-position Burstbucker 2 sports a slightly hotter tone to better balance with the neck-position Burstbucker 1’s output.

A truly timeless tonewood duo

Maple and mahogany. This combination might be an absolute staple of the guitar world now, but it’s worth mentioning that Gibson introduced it with the very guitars that the Les Paul Standard ’50s Plain Top re-creates. Why does it work so well? The stout slab of mahogany that forms the Les Paul Standard ’50s Plain Top’s body gives you a warm, rich, and resonant tonal foundation. However, vintage-style Les Pauls are all about clarity, hence the treble-enhancing carved maple top, an elegant upgrade modeled after Gibson’s iconic archtop guitars that preceded the Les Paul. And somewhere in this lauded solidbody, single-cut tonewood formula lies the secret to Les Paul’s most revered feature — a simply unparalleled level of sustain!

Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s Plain Top Electric Guitar Features:

  • All the feel, tone, and vibe of a late 1950s Les Paul Standard
  • Mahogany body provides ample tonal warmth, while the maple top boosts treble response and note definition
  • Chunky mahogany neck in a full-feeling ’50s Vintage profile

  • Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 pickups produce an ultra-authentic re-creation of the earliest PAF pickups
  • Handwired electronics, with Orange Drop capacitors for period-correct authenticity
  • Exceptionally stable ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge and aluminum stopbar tailpiece
  • Elegant Vintage Deluxe tuners with gorgeous Keystone buttons
  • Classic 1950s-era Les Paul Standard aesthetic appointments, including acrylic trapezoid inlays, single-ply body and neck binding, and mother-of-pearl headstock logo

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Beautiful guitar
The guitar arrived expertly packed and flawless. This is a gorgeous Les Paul,it plays effortlessly, has that vocal quality I crave due to the 50s wiring. I have waited my whole life for this guitar. It's my first Gibson after owning many epiphones.
Music background: Gigging for 30 years
It's hard to look away.
This is my first Standard and first Gibson purchased new. When I saw this guitar on special, I figured this is a price that you cannot walk away from; prices continue to climb. Guitar is immaculate and hard to look away from. The way it pops every time I open the case leaves me in awe. The Sparkling Burgundy finish is another one that you really need to see in person to appreciate given the way the light plays upon it. I mostly play single coils and my other humbuckers run hotter, so the more vintage PAF's did catch me off guard a bit, but no harm; a nice contrast vs. my Studio Premium Plus 490's. Only concern out of the box was the frets. They seemed a bit short, but this appears to be normal and "period accurate" from inspection. I can finally say I have a "Standard" in my collection!
Les Paul Standard by Gibson, is the guitar to own !
excellant guitar ! easy to play, the best neck, great pick ups, the best sustain, guitar of the PROS.
YES, GO GO BUY 1. YOU WILL BE HAPPY. ITS BETTER THAN A 335.
Music background: Bandleader, Music producer, Indy label owner, Blues Guitarist.
Fantastic guitar

As soon as you unbox this and start playing it you can feel the quality in the feel and tone. I have several Custom shop guitars and this is up there with those. The $ Sweetwater was giving off this makes it a fantastic deal. I was looking around for used Les Paul Standards and they were all running at $ to $. Getting a brand new Les Paul standard for the Sweetwater price is great! The red color and the natural wood color on the back is stunning. If you can swing it don't miss out on this one!

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
