Breathtaking '54 Goldtop with Murphy Lab Aging

Do you yearn for the chunky neck of an early Les Paul? The tone and handling of a mid-'50s wraparound tailpiece? The loving look of a true worn-in workhorse? If so, then the Gibson Custom 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged is your chance to get your fretting hand around these features and much more. The 1954 Les Paul lays claim to what many guitarists consider to be the Holy Grail of neck profiles: the Chunky "C". This guitar is also known for its unique stud-mounted wraparound bridge/tailpiece that contributed to its vocal-like sustain. The '54 Reissue packs both of these characteristics, plus a set of Custom Shop P-90 single-coil pickups to serve up all the Freddie King/Jeff Beck snarl you could ask for. Factor in an authentic Heavy Aged finish brought to you by the Gibson Custom Shop's Murphy Lab artisans — named for Master Artisan Tom Murphy — and the 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue is one of the most accurate re-creations this side of vintage. Take it from Les Paul lovers at Sweetwater: if you're chasing that true '54 vibe, you're going to revel in all the Gibson Custom 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged has to offer.

Artfully aged in Gibson's Murphy Lab

Under the leadership of Master Artisan Tom Murphy, Gibson Custom Shop's Murphy Lab performs one specific function: to craft artfully aged instruments using the most cutting-edge tools available. This Gibson Custom 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged features the Murphy Lab's Heavy Aging treatment, boasting prominent checking patterns, along with lots of buckle rash, light arm wear, and neck wear. Think of it as a guitar that’s experienced 50-plus years of life on the road. Murphy Lab heavy-aged hardware puts the final touch on this exquisite instrument. Beyond that, this guitar's extra-rolled fingerboard binding mimics the broken-in look and feel of a Golden-era Gibson. If you clamor for the authenticity and distinct character of a well-worn vintage-style instrument, there's a Murphy Lab-aged guitar that will feel like it was tailor-made just for you.

Fat, satisfying '54 profile neck

The 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged features a Chunky “C” profile neck, which is considered the Holy Grail among Les Paul players who prefer thick necks. If you're in this camp, wrapping your fretting hand around a juicy tree trunk of a neck is the real deal, which makes the 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged your kind of axe.

P-90 pickups supply the original Les Paul sound

When the Les Paul first came out, the P-90 was the only pickup option in town. And when PAF humbuckers came into the fold, P-90s were all but reduced to "budget pickups." Well, it only took about a decade or three for many guitar players to come back around to the P-90. Why? Because they sound amazing! Warm and creamy, snarling and full of life, the Custom Soapbar P-90s in this 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue capture the very essence of the classic pre-PAF Dog Ear P-90. Roll back the tone and keep the volume in check, and you've got access to the liquid jazz lines Les Paul himself liked to play, or open them up and tap into slightly rude and gritty tonal territory. Simple as they are, these classic pickups give the 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue the wide range of classic tones you crave.

The benefits of a wraparound tailpiece

The Gibson Custom 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged sports a vintage-correct wraparound bridge/tailpiece. Are you among the guitarists who believe that this setup — which minimizes points of contact with the string — transfers more energy to the guitar body, thus improving tone? Or perhaps you feel a wraparound enhances your string-bending range by reducing the required excursion to nail a particular pitch. Regardless of the theory behind it, if you're a fan of early Les Pauls, you'll love the 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged's wraparound tailpiece.

Gibson Custom 1954 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue Heavy Aged Electric Guitar Features:

  • Breathtaking '54 Goldtop reissue
  • Murphy Lab Heavy Aging re-creates the loving look of decades of experience on the road
  • Satisfying Chunky “C” neck profile
  • Wraparound bridge/tailpiece gives you enhanced sustain and bendability
  • P-90 pickups serve up old-school Les Paul snarl
  • Hide-glued mahogany neck delivers exceptional sustain and response
  • Aged cellulose nitrate trapezoid fingerboard inlays
  • Thin, vintage-correct, nitrocellulose-lacquer finish

Best Guitar your money can buy

First, thanks to Kurt Martin for working with me for years. He is great and highly recommended.

This guitar is IMHO the best Gibson vintage reissue guitar you can buy (yes better than a high end 59 RI). The P-90s have a rich full tone, every tweak of the volume and tone knobs provide a different character and the stop tail piece seems to provide a bit more zing (while staying perfectly in tune up and down the neck) than the tune-o-matic type. The P-90s can handle any type of music except for extreme metal.

Build quality- I'm lucky enough to have a real 1954 Les Paul Goldtop and bought this as a play out version and I can tell you conclusively this guitar is so close to the original that I get them confused every time I pick one up. The necks are identical, so is the rarely correct gold finish. They got it correct on this one. I'm lucky enough to have a number of reissues including a 55, 57, Jeff Beck and a 59 CC and this is far and away the best playing and sounding.
