Own an Acoustic Masterpiece

We're pleased to offer you this beautiful D-55E dreadnought acoustic guitar. The D-55E reflects nearly half a century of Guild's master craftsmanship, featuring the kind of tonewoods that give you an unrivaled level of expression and melodic character. This D-55E's solid AAA Sitka spruce top reflects a warm and woody brilliance that speaks volumes about its tonal character. A breathtaking bookmatched Indian rosewood back and matching sides add extra aesthetic finesse as well as mellow overtones. And the onboard LR Baggs electronics make the D-55E a pleasure to play live.

A classic Guild in every way

Guild has been building dreadnought acoustic guitars since the early '60s, and their fine products have been revered ever since for their amazingly balanced tones. The little details, such as the scalloped red spruce bracing and mother-of-pearl and abalone block position fret inlays add the kind of finishing touches that make the D-55E stand out as the work of art that it is. And its pure nitrocellulose lacquer finish is guaranteed to age gloriously with your D-55E, maturing into continuously richer tonal qualities throughout the years.

Better than ever

For a traditional dreadnought that sounds balanced up and down the neck, look no further than Guild's best seller: the Guild D-55E acoustic. With a nod to the 1968 original, we're pleased to say that the modern Guild D-55E is better than ever. Its classic spruce-topped Indian rosewood body projects and blooms beautifully thanks to the Ferguson Adirondack spruce bracing, offering clean note separation for fingerpickers and a rich framework for songwriters. And the D-55E ships elegantly appointed with a soft nitrocellulose finish, abalone/pearl inlays, a tortoiseshell/ABS soundhole rosette, and more.

LR Baggs Anthem active acoustic pickup system

The Guild D-55E comes with LR Baggs's popular Anthem active acoustic pickup system, which features a low-profile under-saddle transducer. Combined with an onboard preamplifier with an unobtrusive removable volume control mounted just inside the soundhole, the Anthem is a tremendous performer. Its sleek and effective design removes unnecessary internal components to enhance the coupling between the pickup and the guitar. This improves the sensitivity of the transducer for a robust, lively, and natural acoustic sound.

Guild D-55E Acoustic-electric Guitar Features:

  • The flagship of the Guild acoustic guitar line
  • Designed in the spirit of the 1968 original
  • Powerful LR Baggs Anthem electronics offer natural plugged-in tone
  • Balanced tone up and down the comfortable "C" 3-piece neck
  • Indian rosewood body with AAA Sitka spruce top yields a brilliant, full-bodied sound
  • Adirondack spruce bracing, developed for 2017 by Ren Ferguson, blooms and projects beautifully
  • Elegantly appointed with tortoiseshell rosette, binding, and purfling

  • Bone nut and saddle maximize string sustain

Worth the wait!

Once ordered my D-55 i was told i had to wait due to backorder and shortage of materials that caused the process to be delayed. At one point i was told not to expect it until December of 2021. Well, i received it in October. I was also expecting to send the guitar to not sound perfect and may have to send it back and get another copy if i did not like this particular one, but its absolutely perfect. The folks over at Guild really made a beautiful D-55. the tonal quality and the finish are stunning on the guitar. Sounds exactly as i wanted it to! thats all you can ask from it.

Amazing tone, questionable finish

After drooling for years over the acoustic version of this, I finally decided to get it (unfortunately it wasn't available at SW). But the guitar I got had some markings in the lacquer (top, back, sides, headstock) and there was even a fingerprint in the neck!! I took it to a luthier and he pointed out the case was marking the guitar. Indeed he was right. The markings followed the same quilted pattern as the case padding! I called Guild and they said I can return it but that would take 6-8 months for an answer/fix/replacement. So I decided to return the guitar.

A few months later I learned that it was being discontinued so I decided to try my luck again. I again received a beautiful sounding guitar but it also had some minor marks on the back (possibly minor because this one didn't spend so much time in its case), and it did have scuffs and other markings in the neck binding. On top of it the frets ends were too sharp and uncomfortable.

Overall, this is a guitar with great resonance, harmonics, etc. but the quality of the finish is not what I would expect for a $4K "flagship" guitar. My other Korean-made Guilds didn't have these issues. And my US-made Guild D20 was absolutely perfect out of the box.

When customers come to Sweetwater looking for great, affordable acoustic guitars, we're always quick to tell them about Guild. At the same time, Guild has brought us some real beauties over the years, ranging from top-end acoustic guitars to timeless jazz boxes, and we're happy to say our most seasoned players agree that these instruments are second to none. Whether you're looking for your first acoustic guitar or your next archtop, ask your Sales Engineer about Guild.
