The recipe
The G6128T Player's Edition doesn't stray from the "recipe" for chambered electrics that the master luthiers at Gretsch have been using since the 1950s, when the really legendary body style, pickups, and appointments kicked into full swing and inspired players like Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy, and Chuck Berry. Mahogany has long been the major tonewood used by Gretsch for these iconic chambered electrics. Known for its thick sonic profile that includes crisp highs and midrange resonance, the G6128T Player's Edition is made from select mahogany from body to the U-style neck — beautifully resonant tonewoods from end to end. In addition, a 12"-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and eye-catching pearloid Neo-Classic thumbnail inlays gives you a neck that is legendary for its playability and fast action response.
Pickups with a story
The pair of High Sensitive Filter’Tron humbucking pickups that drive the G6128T has a storied past involving none other than Chet Atkins himself. Unhappy with the hum he would get in the humbuckers he was using, Atkins turned to inventor Ray Butts, who wired two coils out of phase, creating what could be considered the first humbucker. Although the patent and distinction for humbuckers would end up going to another who had been working on a similar design, the resulting sound these pickups produced would become sought-after by many players at the time and even today. These pickups use a magnet that is nearly twice as large as a traditional PAF magnet and taller bobbins, resulting in bigger, brighter tone — a tone that many consider closer to a single-coil but with the heat and density of humbuckers.
