The Most Aggressive Iteration of Gibson’s Explorer

Ready to rock straight out of 1984, the Gibson ’80s Explorer is a stunningly accurate tribute to the decade when the rest of the world finally caught up to the instrument’s retro-futuristic edge. From the pickguard-less mahogany body to the binding-free neck, the Gibson ’80s Explorer is all aggression and attitude — qualities mirrored by this guitar’s dual high-output uncovered ’80s Tribute Humbuckers, providing you with a fatter, more powerful tone than any vintage-style PAF. Next, the neck’s fast-playing Gibson Slim Taper mahogany neck is topped with a sleek 12-inch radius rosewood fingerboard and medium jumbo frets for effortless playability in any application. You also get a rock-solid hardware configuration of a classic Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge/stoptail and Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners for incredible sustain and the utmost reliability. Celebrate the era where the Explorer truly made its mark with the Gibson ’80s Explorer!

A neck built for speed

This guitar’s aerodynamic edges aren’t the only speed-inclined spec on this guitar — the Gibson ’80s Explorer’s rosewood-topped-mahogany neck is carved into a Gibson Slim Taper profile for a lightning-fast feel. The fingerboard’s bend-friendly 12-inch radius and medium jumbo frets are equally accommodating to any guitarist with a penchant for fretboard finesse, and it’s all finished off with period-correct Grover Mini Rotomatic Tuners. Sweetwater guitarists find it’s a fitting foundation for guitarists who lean toward the heavier side of the musical spectrum. Still, there is enough comfort and versatility to please guitarists of all stripes and backgrounds.

Full, fat ’80s Tribute humbucker pickups

The Gibson ’80s Explorer comes equipped with a pair of searing ’80s Tribute humbuckers custom-voiced to capture the screaming leads and hard-hitting metal riffage of this guitar’s titular era. These humbuckers are ideal for players who find a PAF-style ’bucker just a tad too tame. And while ’80s Tribute Humbuckers are certainly a must-have choice for any fan of old-school metal and hard rock, they’re by no means a 1-trick pony. Turn off the distortion for a moment, and you’ll be rewarded with lush, airy cleans, just waiting to be doused in proper ’80s-accurate chorus. Finally, the electronics are wired up to true vintage specs with period-correct Orange Drop capacitors.

Two decades ahead of its time

It’s hard to imagine now, but the two heaviest-looking guitars in Gibson’s arsenal — the Explorer and the Flying V — were introduced in the late ’50s. Unfortunately, the designs were a little too successful at capturing the intended look of the future, and both the V and the Explorer saw limited success for a time. Gibson’s ’80s Explorer and ’80s Flying V instruments celebrate the era when the world finally caught up to Gibson’s aggressive 6-string creations, when both the Flying V and Explorer shapes would be cemented as the style for heavy metal and hard rock guitarists ever after. Both guitars heavily reflect the specs of a 1984-era Gibson, sporting black-on-black finishes, pickguard-less bodies, binding-less necks, and uncovered pickups for a no-nonsense attitude.

Gibson ’80s Explorer Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Heavily based on how Gibson would have shipped an Explorer back in 1984
  • No-nonsense aesthetic, including a pickguard-less body, uncovered pickups, binding-free neck, and moody black-on-black aesthetic
  • Lightweight mahogany body for enhanced tonal warmth and richness
  • Mahogany neck carved into a lightning-fast Gibson Slim Taper profile
  • Rosewood fingerboard in a 12-inch radius with medium jumbo frets provides slick playability and buzz-free bends up and down the ’board
  • High-octane Gibson ’80s Tribute humbuckers produce a raw, ripping tone that’s fatter and more powerful than a low-output vintage-style humbucker
  • Premium wiring, including Orange Drop capacitors
  • Exceptionally reliable Nashville Tune-o-matic stoptail bridge and Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners
  • Gloss nitrocellulose finish allows your guitar to age and wear in over time

Fantastic guitar

Great gibson guitar. Got this on the scratch and Dent. Damned if I can find the Damage. This explorer checks all the boxes for me when it comes to the 80s rock that I play.

Gibson is on the upswing

Having heard the reputation Gibson having quality control issues I was skeptical to order this guitar. I'm glad I didn't hold back, this guitar is an absolute beast setup and fret finishing were A1, not a single blemish on the fretboard or body at all. Packed with extreme care from Gibson as well as the repack from sweetwater. The pickups are super hot and clear sounding and pair Great with my Mesa Mark V:35. Tuning stability is good but some locking tuners from the factory would be a nice touch. Overall an amazing player and as always amazing customer care, thank you to Sweetwater as well as my sales rep Alex!

I Really Like This Guitar, But One Thing Keeps Me From 5 Stars...

Metallica (James Hetfield) was the reason I fell in love with heavy music when I was 13 way back in 1997. I still think Hetfield with an EXP slung low is the height of metal-cool. By the time I started playing guitar in about 2001, it was post-lawsuit against the company that was making Hetfield's guitars by that point, so it wasn't easy (nor could I afford) one. I missed out on the 1984 EXP reissue that Gibson did about 15 years ago, so I had promised myself that if and when there was ever another reissue, I'd go for it (especially considering how insane the prices for the MX-250s have become). Out of nowhere, I saw the Gibson social media post that they were doing an Eighties Explorer, and I immediately jumped onto Sweetwater's site. After a couple of hours making sure I had the money in line, I ordered one.

I tell that story to set up that the guitar delivers on all the promises of nostalgia. I can't help but smile playing it, and it sounds really good. The neck is fast and very comfortable. It's resonant, and while not light, certainly is comfortable to have on the strap for a long time. Of the three Gibsons I've purchased in my life, this one came in with the best QC of them (and as always, Sweetwater set it up great). I don't see any finishing flaws or the other stuff Gibson has been notorious for as of late. For those of you like me wanting the connection to riffs of years past, it's great. Things do seem good under the new management.

My ONLY reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the MSRP. If it was a $ guitar, I absolutely would have given it five stars. But, when I look at a guitar that's relatively frills free (no binding, no trem-system, stock hardware, etc.), and I see what else exists in that same price range, I feel the tiniest bit let down. I can't help but feel like Gibson, as well as everyone else (how many Metallica puns have I seen in the ads?) knows what this guitar really is, and we're paying a signature guitar premium without the signature features. That said, I know prices on everything have skyrocketed the last few years.

A Shredder's Dream: The Gibson '80s Explorer Ebony

I recently had the pleasure of acquiring the Gibson '80s Explorer Solidbody Electric Guitar in Ebony from Sweetwater, and I must say, it's been nothing short of a rock 'n' roll revelation. From the moment I started my journey with this iconic instrument, Sweetwater's excellent service, particularly thanks to salesperson Jacob Ford, and the lightning-fast first-class shipping made the entire experience a joy.

First and foremost, let me commend Jacob Ford, the salesperson who assisted me in choosing the perfect guitar. Jacob's expertise and passion for music were palpable during our conversation. He patiently answered all my questions, offered valuable insights, and helped me make an informed decision. His recommendations were spot-on, and I couldn't be happier with the result. Jacob's dedication to customer satisfaction truly set the tone for this exceptional experience.

Sweetwater's commitment to fast and reliable shipping deserves accolades as well. I opted for their first-class shipping option, and it lived up to its name. The Gibson '80s Explorer arrived at my doorstep promptly, securely packaged, and in pristine condition. It's evident that Sweetwater takes great care in ensuring that their products reach customers safely and swiftly.

Now, let's talk about the star of the show, the Gibson '80s Explorer itself. This guitar is an absolute beast when it comes to performance. The ebony finish exudes a timeless, sleek aesthetic that's both visually stunning and a nod to rock 'n' roll history. The build quality is impeccable, a testament to Gibson's legacy of craftsmanship. The '80s Explorer's unique body shape and design make it not just a musical instrument but also a work of art.

Tonally, this guitar is a dream come true for any player seeking versatility. The Gibson '80s Explorer boasts a rich, resonant sound with a perfect blend of warmth and clarity. Whether you're playing clean or cranking up the gain for a face-melting solo, this instrument delivers with precision and power. The humbucking pickups provide a wide sonic palette, allowing me to explore a range of genres from classic rock to heavy metal, all with impressive sustain and articulation.

The playability of the '80s Explorer is top-notch. The slim-taper neck profile and 22-fret rosewood fingerboard make it incredibly comfortable to navigate the fretboard. It stays in tune exceptionally well, even during aggressive bends and dive bombs, thanks to its reliable hardware.

In conclusion, my experience purchasing the Gibson '80s Explorer Ebony from Sweetwater has been nothing short of exceptional. Jacob Ford's expertise and guidance, coupled with Sweetwater's lightning-fast shipping, ensured a seamless buying process. As for the guitar itself, the Gibson '80s Explorer is a rock legend reborn, offering unparalleled sound, playability, and aesthetics. If you're in the market for a high-quality instrument that pays homage to the golden era of rock, look no further than the Gibson '80s Explorer. It's a true shredder's dream come true.

Why did it take so long? This is the guitar Gibson should've been making from the start!

I'm a Metallica fanatic. I've owned ESP MXII Explorers, and a bunch of Gibson explorers with the ridiculous pick guard. The pickups sounded really weird to me at first, but after tracking some Metallica Master of Puppets styled original songs with it, they're perfect for this guitar. The guitar is super resonant with a beefy tone that feels fantastic in your hands. I love how absolutely aesthetic this thing looks. No tooling marks, no weird paint stuff, just an all around banger of a guitar. You can really dig in on it too. It feels like a real studio, and live performer. Just an all around great guitar. This is the real deal, one and done Hetfield-esque guitar. Just perfect.
