Boost Based on a Classic Preamp

The Xotic EP Booster pedal for electric guitar is based on the preamp stage of the classic EP-3 echo effects processor. Legendary guitarists used that preamp to craft their studio tones, including Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, and Eric Johnson. The EP Booster pedal delivers up to 20dB of boost that will add an undeniably rich character to your guitar tone. Internal Dip switches allow you to fine-tune the boost frequencies and EQ settings. To hit your amp harder while also adding some character to your tone, Sweetwater can highly recommend the Xotic EP Booster pedal.

Xotic: Boutique pedals, preamps, and more

Xotic was born in a small garage in Southern California in 1996 and quickly became known for high-quality, boutique bass guitars and bass preamps. These days, they've expanded the pedal line, crafting stompboxes that are played by some of the finest guitarists in the business. Their acclaimed AC Booster, RC Booster, and BB Preamp pedals remain some of their most popular pedals.

EP Booster

I have been looking for a boost for some time. I already had a Fulltone GT-500 with a built in boost, which worked fine. My son tried the GT-500 and really liked it so I gave it to him. I spent a few hours watching YouTube and narrowed my search to the EP Booster and the TC Electronics Spark Mini. I decided on the EP from reviews on Sweetwater. I use Tweed clones and the addition of the EP made my rig come alive. My Strat with DiMarzio Areas, became thick, but still chimey. My humbucker Strat with 36th Anniversary PAFs really sings. My Teles are just overboard amazing sounding. Every stomp box sounds fuller and sweeter. My MXR micro flanger, lost it's treble bite and smoothed out becoming much more musical. I took the recommendation of another reviewer here and put both switches down, with the knob at 9 o'clock and then moved the knob around. There is not a bad setting to be had. I would highly recommend this booster. The TC Electronics Spark mini is great, the EP just sounds better.
Music background: Gigged for 35 years, now just a hobby recorder.

Wonderful booster

Sounds great and built like a tank. This thing is a great always on pedal and just adds a bit of shimmer to a tube amp. If you have a lot of pedals and long cables runs consider one at the beginning and end of your chain.

The real EP3 preamp in a small hvy duty box

1st off, the best booster pedal ever, pay a lot more get a lot less. Just about every demo/video of this little puppy (EP3) either amounts to two things, one they have no idea what the Echoplex Ep3 tape delay front end preamp did, and two they have no idea what they are talking about regarding the internal DIP switches. The real true sounding EP3 preamp rolled off the harsh high end of the guitar and for Strats this was a god send, perhaps the whole basis of Eric Johnson's foundation tone is his EP3 tape unit, using the EP3 front end preamp it has, there are no adjustments on the tape unit, it is a set boost level, only slight, rolls off the high end. Jimmy Page found it worked magic on the Les Paul as well. Simply warms up the tone, more body, thickness, is not a "clean" no EQ boost. Now there are other claimed EP3 preamp units which simply do not do what the original did.The Xoitic accurately does the original tone magic with some nice additions on the internal switches and this is where everyone gets it wrong, via, not bothering to read a one page FAQ by Xoitic on what they do. Switch 1 when UP adds a set 3db boost, NO EQ change, this allows you to have the knob at min and get a specific 3db boost which is plenty. It of course adds more to the highest db boost the unit can do and that can be novel in a tube amp You can crank the EP3 boost and pretty much hear Jimmy Page's fairly clean tone with its body and thickness from the LP. Switch 2 when UP adds back in the treble high cut which makes the EQ FLAT, no boost. The best to my mind is switches down, classic EP3 mode, knob about 9:00, after all dirt. A further coolness of this pedal is using before your drives to intensify the gain structure OR in my "humble" opinion put it after all your dirt. It will make any drive or gain thicker, less harsh and just more body to the tone. For a low cost this is one of the best things you can have on a board. For me the magic is SWITCHES DWN, 9:00, just a little boost END OF DRIVE/GAIN pedal CHAIN and let the EQ magic do its thing. I know the basic thought is boost before drive and I get that, options to that issue are the EP3 preamp and a Klon.

A must have classic real deal EP3 boost

I wish I would have gotten one of these ages ago. I just was not into small pedals nor worried about space. But not the point of this puppy really. It is not small for the sake of making a small pedal. Unlike another pedal which claims to be a EP3 preamp that just does not duplicate the EP3 tape preamp, this one is the real deal. The famous preamp in that tape unit rolled off the harsher high end and made your tone thicker and just a notably better sounding (witness Eric Johnson's tone secret, EVH and Pagey among many others). Something you just left on as plugging into an EP3 tape unit had that preamp on and no adjustments to it. Xiotic has delivered that preamp with options of tremendous boost and EQ adjust via internal DIP switches. One switch adds a +3db boost which you can use to add an exact 3db with the knob all the way dwn or added to the overall capability of the knob to full on. The other switch is an EQ adjust to keep the top end. Personally I like the high roll off and the +3 switch on w the knob all the way dwn. Placing it after your drives and/or high gains makes them thicker, less harsh high end and just better sounding. An always on pedal featuring a quality 1M ohm input and full range bandwidth output w 18v capability. Heavy stoutly built rascal as well. Outside of a new cool small sized BBE pedal the best $100 you'll ever spend on a pedal.

The sound goes from transparent to a slight amount of grit. It adds a significant boost to my overdrive pedals that really wakes things up. Single coil pickups benefit greatly from this booster. Highly recommended.
