Learn to Fly with Dave Grohl’s Trini Lopez–inspired DG-335

Requested by Foo Fighters fanatics for more than a decade, Dave Grohl’s iconic, diamond-clad semi-hollowbody makes its way into standard production with the Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335. This premium-grade Epiphone immaculately replicates the Grammy winner’s ultra-rare Gibson Custom DG-335 signature model, starting with a crisp and resonant laminated maple body and Trini Lopez–inspired bound diamond-shaped soundholes. Next, the chunky, one-piece mahogany neck proudly supports a laurel fingerboard that’s flush with eye-catching split-diamond mother-of-pearl inlays. It’s all topped off with an angular Firebird-style headstock equipped with Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners, complementing the rock-solid reliability of the LockTone ABR bridge. However, the Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335’s Gibson Custom inspiration reaches far beyond the aesthetic realm — a superb pair of Gibson USA Burstbucker pickups emboldens the DG-335 with a rich, expressive, and remarkably dynamic humbucking roar that’ll show off the best (the best, the best) of your riffs and rhythms. A professional-grade instrument in every respect, the Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335 is no pretender; it’s the real deal and ready to fuel your “Everlong” alt-rock aspirations.

Premium Gibson USA Burstbucker pickups

The Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335 lives up to its Gibson Custom heritage with a powerful one-two punch of Burstbucker brilliance. This guitar’s Gibson USA Burstbucker pickups — the very same series of pickups found in Grohl’s original Gibson Custom run of DG-335s — deliver an exceptionally warm and dynamic PAF-style bite. From character-filled cleans to the buzzsaw edge of Grohl’s countless alternative anthems, Gibson USA Burstbuckers are an all-purpose sonic monkey wrench that can handle just about anything you can throw at them. Finally, a top-quality electronics configuration consisting of CTS pots, Mallory 150 series capacitors, and a Switchcraft toggle rounds the Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335 off with a premium edge.

Stout one-piece mahogany neck

A stout one-piece chunk of mahogany forms the Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335’s neck, carved into an elliptical “C” shape to mirror Grohl’s preferred specs. Sweetwater guitarists of all styles appreciate how this slightly chunky shape’s pleasantly full-feeling grip provides a perfect platform to dish out ripping rhythms, expressive leads, and high-energy riffs. Topside, you get a bound laurel fingerboard that’s smooth on your fingers. It’s all capped off with a gorgeous set of split-diamond mother-of-pearl inlays.

A high-performance reimagining of Grohl’s number one ES-335

Like the Gibson Custom DG-335 that came before it, the Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335 is essentially a stage-minded re-creation of Grohl’s number one axe: a 1967 Gibson Trini Lopez Signature ES-335, first acquired back when he was merely the drummer of a not-so-little-known Seattle grunge act named Nirvana. In stark contrast to your typical ES-335, Grohl’s signature Trini Lopez–inspired Epiphone boasts a diamond-shaped pair of soundholes, along with a pickguard-less top for a sleeker style. What’s more, the headstock also wears an angular edge with an aggressive-looking Firebird-style design, complete with a rock-solid set of Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners. A high-performance LockTone ABR bridge with a LockTone stopbar tailpiece rounds it all out with a stage-ready edge, delivering superior sustain and stability compared to the Trini Lopez ES-335’s original trapeze tailpiece.

Epiphone Dave Grohl DG-335 Semi-hollowbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Dave Grohl’s first signature Epiphone model, based on his iconic Pelham Blue Gibson DG-335
  • Laminated maple body with bound diamond-shaped soundholes
  • 1-piece mahogany neck carved into a pleasing elliptical “C” shape
  • Stylish Firebird-style headstock equipped with rock-solid Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners
  • 12-inch-radius laurel fingerboard brandishing a sleek set of split-diamond mother-of-pearl inlays
  • Supremely stable LockTone ABR bridge with stopbar tailpiece
  • Gibson USA Burstbucker pickups — regularly utilized by Grohl up onstage — that beautifully replicate the dynamic warmth and grit of a vintage PAF humbucker
  • Top-quality electronics that include premium CTS pots and Mallory 150 series capacitors

Awesome!!

Received it day 1 - thank you, Adam!! I am honestly amazed at how good it feels, looks and plays. Compared to my '64 Trini Lopez custom shop, it is extremely close... the color is a bit lighter than an actual pelham blue, but it still looks awesome. I am attaching a photo next to my '64 Trini.

The Grohl to my Foo

Firstly thanks to Jake Hersha for sorting me out. I always get great service from Jake and the team at Sweetwater. The guitar arrived with no damage and was securely packed. Initial thoughts, the neck is chunky and will take some getting used to but I like it. The fret board looks amazing as does the rest of the guitar. I feel like the pelham blue is lighter than Dave's usual. Despite that, Epiphone did a great job with this one. Plugged it in and this guitar is a beast, the burstbuckers sound amazing and I feel like this is going to be my go to electric for a good while. May pull off the tuners to put on the grover mini locking ones at some stage. If you are a Dave Grohl fan (who isn't) or simply interested in this guitar...then don't hesitate and just buy it. You absolutely won't regret it. In Dave we trust!

Great Guitar, Great Service

First things first. Thank you to Nick Barton for assisting me in getting this guitar. Nick has been my sales engineer for several years now. I really can't say enough about how knowledgeable and helpful Nick has been over the years. What I appreciate most has been the few times I've asked a question he didn't know an answer to, he never tried to B.S. me. He said "I don't know but I'll find out and get back to you.".
I also want to mention Carson Peach. He stepped up and got me some quick answers while Nick was away. Some other places are content to blow you off if "your guy" isn't around. Sweetwater service is ***** star as well.
The Guitar is honestly better than I expected or hoped for. Absolutely perfect fit & finish. It was still in tune, fret ends are fine, nut is spot on. The action is very good, no dead spots or buzzing. Time will tell how well it holds tuning and who knows maybe locking tuners are in the future but as of a few hours (after the 24 hrs. of acclimating) it's just fine.
The hard case is very well made too. Yes, there are other 335 types and makes out there that may be less, but nothing detracts from this guitar. I do recommend it to anyone interested as a player or just a fan.

Worth the wait!

I have wanted this guitar for a long time and was unable to get one of the original Gibson run. I feel like I followed the rumors about this epiphone release for a lifetime. It plays amazing right out of the box. Big shoutout to my sales engineer Logan for all the help.

Wow!

This thing roars!! If you're hesitant because of the price, do not be. It is not your typical "Epiphone" - this baby seriously kicks ***! After shipping it was still practically in tune. It feels, and most important, sounds like a Gibson - especially with the Burstbuckers. Dave Grohl has got to be proud of this one!
