If the polarity of identical or near-identical signals is incorrect (like one of two mics on a guitar cabinet or two mics on any single source), then when the two are combined they will either completely cancel out or cause cancellations on certain frequencies, resulting in diminished sound quality. Polarity is absolute, either correct or reversed.
