Classic Gretsch Vibe with Explosive Maple Tone

This Gretsch Catalina Maple shell recipe exhibits explosive projection and balanced, wide-ranging tone. The fast response and vibrant sound make this an exceptional kit for any style of music, rock to country, and a great setup for recording studios. Shells are built from seven plies of soft Asian maple and come crowned with Gretsch's trademark rounded 30° bearing edges and Round Badge visuals. Combined, these qualities give the Catalina Maple a dry, beefy tone with a top-end bite and classic look that Gretsch fans of all stripes will take to immediately.

Versatile 7-ply maple shells

Here's a Sweetwater refresher on tonewoods: whether you're talking drum shells or electric guitars, maple makes an exceptionally musical foundation. It has a fast, explosive response that's also very dynamic, allowing the subtle details of your performance to shine through. The Catalina Maple shell pack delivers a wide-ranging tone that's suitable for any musical style, making it a perfect addition to the recording studio.

Rounded 30° bearing edges

The Catalina Maple takes sonic cues from Gretsch kits of antiquity. Rounded 30° bearing edges maximize the surface area between the hoops and shells for a dry, punchy response.

A proud part of Gretsch's American music legacy

The Catalina Maple series is a proud part of Gretsch's American music legacy. Everyone knows Gretsch electric guitars and drums, but did you know they got their start in 1883 as a banjo company? It wasn't long before Gretsch was making mandolins, ukuleles, and eventually flat-top guitars, contributing to the very roots of American music. So when you play the Gretsch Catalina Maple shell pack, you're playing more than a great kit, you're playing a piece of American music history.

Factory batter heads are paper- drumset itself is excellent

This shell pack + Hardware ships in two boxes- Bass 10, 12 and 16 toms in one box, hardware, snare, 14 tom and 14 snare in the other. Everything was well packaged and some of the toms are fully assembled, others partially or not at all. As good as can be expected. Lots of packing material and boxes everywhere when you're done.

I played the 10 and 12 with factory heads and broke the 10" within minutes. Never broken a head before. I replaced all the heads with Evans G2 and Genera resonant, Genera HD dry on the snare batter and tuned with a drum dial (as suggested by other reviewers) it definitely does a good job, up to you to fine tune.

Bass drum sounded so boomy with a Remo Ambassador batter and no damping. I put a rolled bath towel inside and switched to an Aquarian Super Kick 2 and it sounds great now. I didn't try the factory head.

The hardware is good, not great. The hardware is robust but the threads are a little "grainy" on the tom mounts and some tension rods. Tom holders are easy to position and very flexible/adjustable. Hanging the 8" Tom off a heavy cymbal stand is no problem. Snare throw off is kind of atrocious compared to my Sakae's. Rough to operate and not aesthetic at all.

The black stardust wrap looks really awesome and not overstated. I personally think it's a ton of fun to have a 7 piece kit and this one sounds and plays great for not a ton of money. I would suggest budgeting for at least all new batter heads. I think you could leave the resonants and snare side without issue.

Looking at the price I think this gets done what a DW design kit would for a lot less money. The hardware may lack a bit but you do not have to provide any tom holders. All said and done it is a great value if you want a big kit

Best 7 piece for the money

Have played Ludwigs and Pearl drums in the past. Although these are also great names in drumkit
manufacturers, this Gretsch set has them beat hands down The tone quality and ease of tuning is
fantastic. Pair these with the Gretsch G5 hardware and the Zildian A series of cymbals The double tom
mount included will enable you to position these toms at any angle. Although only available in 5 color
wrap variations, any of the color wraps you choose will look great. I chose the Cherry Burst Satin.
Need only a 5 piece set? Get the 7 piece anyway. (a 16" X 16" and a 7" X 8") are added at only a slight price increase. If playing a smaller venue, such as a cocktail lounge, leave the 2 extra toms at home for a future gig.
The color wrap, lugs, drumheads, are all top quality. Although you could spend upwards of $6,500
for a top of the line DW set of drums, save your money. Use the extra cash you save to purchase some
hard shell cases to absorb the bumps and bruises between gigs. You'll still have plenty of cash left over. You will be hard pressed to hear the difference between this Gretsch set and a set of top of the line DW's.
As you would on any drumkit, make sure you purchase a DrumDial to accurately tune both the batter heads and resonance heads. Sweetwater is a great company to deal with. Page through their extensive online catalog. If it has anything to do with music, they have it. If they don't have what you need, IT DOESN'T EXIST. This is the most professional company I have every dealt with The staff are all pro's in their field. If you have questions, take their advise. They know their stuff.
