A Great-sounding Banjo with a Walnut Resonator

A throwback to a simpler era, the Ibanez B300 5-string banjo harkens back to a time before countless hair bands put Ibanez on the map as a premier maker of metal weaponry. Yes, Ibanez was a highly respected banjo manufacturer, and even collaborated on a signature model with the late, great Earl Scruggs. Ibanez is back in the banjo biz. The B300 sports a basswood block rim, a rolled tone ring, and a toneful walnut resonator. The smooth-playing neck, with its special acrylic fingerboard inlay, also benefits from Ibanez's considerable experience in designing shredtastic guitars. Call your Sweetwater Sales Engineer and check out the Ibanez B300 5-string banjo!

Not my main instrument

I think this Banjo is pretty decent especially for the price. Mine sounds good and plays very well. My history playing banjo goes back about 25 years but I always had vintage used banjo's and it is nice to have a new one. I have played Ibanez banjo's from the 70's that were unreal and I am glad they are back in the game. Of course Sweetwater's customer service is fabulous.

Excellent Value

I'm a long-time guitarist and decided to start learning banjo. Having never played banjo, and very little knowledge about the instrument in general, this review comes from my 35+ years of playing guitar, and bass, and recording many projects as a recording engineer. I'm truly surprised at how affordable this banjo is, and how well it's made. The inlays are perfect, the fretboard is nice and smooth with no sharp edges on the frets. The finish is absolutely beautiful, and the action is just right, making it really easy to play. The sound is great! It actually sounds a bit more "woody" or "warm" compared to a lot of banjo recordings I've heard. My only criticism involves the tuning machines. I'm not sure what gear ratio is involved, but I find it difficult to get each string up to perfect pitch because the of the low gear ratio. Other than that, this is really nice instrument, and I would readily recommend it to anyone who is testing the banjo waters.

Nice looking and playing with some work to setup

This is my first banjo - I'm a 3-finger dobro and guitar picker and play with a banjo player. I can pick and play, so when I say this banjo is pretty good it's not coming from a completely ignorant novice, but this was a learning curve to setup out of the box. I chose this 300 banjo model to hopefully get a darker warm tone than my bandmate's Goodtime. Gootimes sound clean, bright and cheerful as hell (as the name indicates) and they are not what I want to hear when I play Tennessee Pusher and other dreary dark folk tunes. This was a good buy for rosewood resonator tone. Decided to get one and chose sweetwater for their customer service overkill. It was shipped strung but was otherwise a good shipping job with bridge removed and strings slacked. Drum was tight enough for good tone and bridge support and did not require tightening. Bridge was not that difficult to put in place and set intonation, but took time and studying YouTubes on banjo setups. To set the bridge I used the measurement method to mirror the distance from center of 12th fret from inside of nut. Used metric MM ruler for greater accuracy and measured to center of 12th fret. Set bridge with the slight slant leaning to the back. Tuned it up and tuners slipped and unrolled. Tightened tuner screws and that fixed the slippage. Tuned it up again and again and set intonation with slight slide adjustments to bridge while matching open tone to 12th fret. Got it tuned again and strings slipped off bridge notches. Got out my needle file and notched the bridge. Got it tuned again and notes finally rang out with nice rosewood tone (but a bit too dark and not so warm). I played it for about three hours after setup and the tuning settled-in and now keeps well. I plan on experimenting with other bridges to warm the tone. All in all a good quality and enjoyably playable instrument. Even frets and a good banjo for hammer-on fretting - nice tone and sustain when plucking and hammering. I have guitars including Martin and Gibson, this is my first banjo, but this appears well-made and embellished with plenty of crisply detailed faux mother of pearl - but looks classy in an overdone Japanese way. Good machined frets, metalwork, hardware and wood finish. Took several hours to setup with patience and care. I had never set one up before but it was fun to learn. Definitely more work to setup than a new guitar but quite happy with it.
