Audient mic pres and Burr Brown converters onboard

The ASP800 features eight of Audient's acclaimed Class A console mic preamps - and believe us - they sound amazing. For the best possible conversion, you also get integral ADC with the highest grade converters from Burr Brown, a leader in converter technology. The result is stunningly transparent sound, with just a taste of coloration. It's the ideal prescription to cure lackluster studio sound.

Two Retro Channels for instant vintage vibe

Now, about the aforementioned coloration. Audient is famous for their ultra-clean mic pres - but that doesn't mean they don't appreciate the allure of added color. Whether enhancing a bass with a taste of growl or sparkling up a lead vocal, ASP800's cutting-edge harmonic generation circuitry if just what you need. Retro Channels One and Two each feature Audient's proprietary variable harmonic Colour controls, HMX and IRON. Serving up sonics reminiscent of 1960s tube designs and the coveted pastache of transformer-juiced '70s British consoles, HMX and Iron will add a whole new glorious dimension to your audio. Season to taste.

HMX MOSFET drive - sweet, fat, and punchy

Sweetwater engineers love the sound of tubes and if you're with us on this, you're going to dig Audient's HMX - the ASP800's custom harmonic distortion control. Harkening back to vintage tube preamp designs from the 1960s, HMX delivers a sweet, fat sound that's works wonders on everything from electric guitars to bass synths to drums. HMX's discrete MOSFET technology produces asymmetrical harmonic distortion that gives you the option of adding body and lushness to the ASP800's pristine mic preamp, DI, or line input.

Audient ASP800 Features:
  • Eight world-Class Audient Console mic preamps
  • Two Retro Channels with Dual Stage COLOUR Saturation Controls - HMX & IRON
  • Two Discrete JFET instrument inputs
  • Pristine 118-dB Burr-Brown A-D converters
  • Balanced analog line outputs
  • Word clock input

Incredible sonics and value

This set of 8 preamps sounds really good. It handles high sound pressure levels well, things such as brass, kick drum, snare, etc. It also shines on acoustic guitar, flute, oboe, french horn, violin and cello. It is very, very clean and warm sounding. An added benefit is how small and portable this unit is for remote or off-site recording. The build feels really pro; the knobs are just the right size and are easy to grasp. I don't believe you will find anything that sounds better than this unit in this price range.

HIGHLY Impressed

I was a bit nervous about buying this Audient ASP800 seeing several mixed reviews... Now that I have it I'm totally confused as to why there are any reviews other than 5 stars! I've used a lot of different preamps, some costing 3 times what this cost for 1 channel! This thing is a no brainer for drum tracking! The retro channels are amazing and worth the price of admission on their own! I always run kick and snare through these bad boys! They really sound incredible! Channels 3-8 are just great clean pres with nice fast transients. The only reason I could see anyone being disappointed with this purchase is if you're expecting super colorful pres. Channels 3-8 are not what I would call colorful, but they are very clean! I am using this with an Antelope Orion Studio and I clock the Audient off of the Orion, so I can't speak for the clocking on the Audient. I have no doubt that the Orion clocking improves the sound of the Audient some, but as for how much I have no idea? Long story short, this is an ABSOLUTE STEAL if your looking to add 2 channels to your rig... but the fact that it adds 8 channels this ASP800 is armed robbery!! Buy it :)

SOLID LITTLE BOX

EVERYTIME I RECORD I TURN THIS BADBOY ON! CURRENTLY I USE A FOCUSRITE CLARETT 8PREX, AN ELEVEN RACK, AND ALSO A AUDIENT ASP880, AND NOW ALSO THIS AUDIENT ASP800. I HAVE BOTH OF THE AUDIENTS CLOCKED INTO THE INTERFACE EACH WITH THEIR OWN CABLE AND THEN INTO AN ADAPTER INTO THE WORDCLOCK OUT OF THE FOCUSRITE. I SET THE SAMPLE RATE USING THE FOCUSRITE AS THE MASTER IN THE FOCUSRITE CONTROL AT EITHER 48K FOR 24 CHANNELS, OR 96K FOR 16 CHANNELS; 8 CHANNELS ON THE FOCUSRITE, AND THE FIRST 4 CHANNELS ON EACH AUDIENT BOX. SINCE IVE GOTTEN THIS ASP800 JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING GOES BACK THRU THE FIRST 2 HMX &IRON CHANNELS USING THE OUTS OF THE FOCUSRITE INTO THE LINE INS OF THE ASP800. IT REALLY DOES SOMETHING THAT MAKES MY RECORDINGS MORE LIVELY AND MORE UNIQUE THAN JUST EQ ALONE. IM COMPLETELY HAPPY WITH MY OTHER 3 BOXES AND THIS ONE JUST ADDS TO IT ALL SONICALLY AND LOGISTICALLY. CHANNELS 3-7 I USE FOR TOMTOMS WHICH ARE USUALLY ALWAYS MICD AND READY TO GO. I KEEP CHANNEL 8 OPEN SO I CAN A-B DIFFERENT VOCAL MICS WITH THE OTHER 3 BOXES. I USE THE DI TYPICALLY FOR SYNTHS AND I THINK THEYRE OK FOR THAT. FOR BASS I LIKE THE FOCUSRITE DI WITH AIR ON A LITTLE BETTER, BUT THESE ARE DEFINITELY GOOD. BUT, TYPICALLY BASS GOES THRU THE ELEVEN RACK ANYWAYS. AS FOR THE SOUND; THE RETRO CHANNELS 1&2 HAVE A SOUND THAT IS REALLY DIFFERENT THAN ANYTHING THE FOCUSRITE, ASP880, OR CHANNELS 3-8 ON THE ASP800 OFFER, THEY REALLY ARE THEIR OWN THING. CHANNELS 3-8 ARE A BONUS WHICH ARE ALSO DIFFERENT SOUNDING THAN THE ASP880'S WHICH IN TURN ARE ALSO DIFFERENT THAN THE FOCUSRITES OR THE ELEVEN RACKS. THE TYPICAL SETUP FOR ME WITH MY GO TO DW COLLLECTORS HEAVY METAL DOUBLE KICK-DRUM SETUP (BASICALLY A REV SETUP) IS THIS: DYNAMIC TOM MICS ON 3-7 OF THE ASP800(AUDIX D2'S ON THE 8,10,& 12, AND D4'S ONT HE 14&16 TOMS), SE X1D CONDENSOR KICKDRUM MICS ON ASP880, TOP &BOTTOM SM57 DYNAMIC SNARE MICS ON ASP880, SE 2200C CONDENSOR OVER HEADS ON ASP880 AND AUDIX D6 DYNAMIC KICKDRUM MICS ON THE FOCUSRITE CLARETT 8PREX WITH AIR ON, RIDE AND HIGHHAT USE SE5P'S THRU THE ASP880, ALL BLENDED TO TASTE. FOR GUITAR THE SE VOODOO1 RIBBON MIC GOES THRU THE ASP880 AND THE SENNHISER AND SM57 GO THRU THE FOCUSRITE OR THRU THE AUDIENTS DEPENDING IF IM DOING RYTHMS OR LEADS. I LIKE THE CHUGGA CHUGGA HEAVY STUFF THRU THE FOCUSRITE WITH THE AIR ON AND LEADS THRU THRU EITHER ONE OF THE AUDIENTS BECAUSE THEY SEEM TO TRANSLATE A BIT BRIGHTER AND MAYBE THE ASP800 IS A LITTLE BRIGHTER MAYBE. VOCAL TRACKS ARE DIFFERENT EVERYTIME, SOMETIMES I EVEN TRACK THEM THRU THE ELEVEN RACK. I USE THE ELEVEN RACK WHEN WRITING SONGS SINCE ITS SO EASY AND QUIET, BUT THE REAL RECORDINGS HAPPEN WITH A MIC'D ORANGE 4X12 AND A CRANKED TUBE HEAD AND MXR PEDALS AND A WELL PLAYED GUITAR. AND AGAIN AFTER I RECORD EVERYTHING GOES OUT OF THE FOCUSRITE AND THE BACK THRU THE ASP800'S RETRO CHANNELS FOR A LITTLE TRANSFORMER MAGIC. THE REVIEWS ARE NO JOKE, THIS BOX DOES WHAT IT CLAIMS. AS FOR THE NO FRONT SWITCH COMPLAINTS I KEEP READING ABOUT, I RUN THE AUDIENTS AND THE COMPRESSORS AND HEADPHONE AMP THRU AN ALESIS POWERTRIP8 IN ITS OWN RACK NEXT TO THE OTHE RACK WITH ITS OWN POWERTRIP8, SO THATS THAT. THIS IS A COOL BOX, I THINK YOU SHOULD TRY IT OUT. I LIKE TO EQ EVERYTHING AND THE 2 RETRO CHANNELS DO ACHIEVE SOMETHING THAT I CANT USING EQ ALONE. SO BUY THIS AND CREATE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC THAT YOU CAN SHARE WITH OTHERS AND MAKE YOUR MOM SMILE! ENJOY READ MY OTHER REVIEWS ONTHOSE PRODUCTS MENTIONED

Makes me sound professional!

I'm just starting to make my way in recording and building up my rig (I learnt my audio chops on an ASP 8024 console in New York) so couldn't wait to see at what seems a crazy price if the ASP800 actually delivers on what the marketing guys say. The console sound in the box - yeah right... but it does! The ASP800 appears to be a simple box but really needs checking out if you need more pre's. It really delivers professional grade, clean and crystal clear sound and that's before getting to fool around with the sound shaping retro channels. I checked out the soundcloud stuff on the Audient site and I'm now using iron on my 808,it just creates such an inspirational tone. I'd rate it as a 6.0 if I could!

One word. Incredible.

I think everyone needs a little HMX & IRON in their life! Crazy good on variety of sources from drums, guitars, horns to keys. I think I love the ASP800 even more than my wife of 15 years... only joking honey ! I like how Audient also have the other ASP880 with the sweepable filters and switchable impedance on every channel, which is nicely priced. May have to save up for one of those too ;) Build quality is fantastic too, feels like this unit will last me a long time, which is nice. This has to be a compulsory purchase for anyone with an unused optical input port in their setup!!
