USB versus the PC – it hasn’t been pretty.
“I recently found out from [Sweetwater Sales Engineer] that MOTU’s MIDI Express for PC does not work with USB, only parallel. Why? Do any USB interfaces work?”
On the Macintosh side of things USB MIDI interfaces have really taken off, but it has been very slow going on the PC. Most of the companies are working on PC drivers, however there have been problems with timing and reliability. Thankfully most PC’s have parallel or serial ports that work just fine for MIDI. The Macintosh issue came to a head last year when Apple started shipping Macs that did not have any serial ports, only USB and Firewire. This was no doubt the catalyst for getting USB support happening for the Mac.
One product that we have verified works with the PC via USB is the MIDIMan MIDISport 2 x 2 interface. Supposedly the Unitor/AMT8 by EMagic is coming soon.
