To shorten by cutting off excess or unwanted material. Truncate is a command that has been part of sample editing from almost the very beginning and in that context refers to discarding excess data (sound) at either end of a desired sound file. Many samplers and sample editors provide various types of automated truncating that can come in handy for speedy creation of samples.
