Same Guitar Amp, Different Rooms

When you’re recording multiple guitar tracks, most producers recommend capturing different guitar sounds in different takes, in order to give your riffs and songs more texture and depth. But what if you don’t have a collection of guitar and amplifiers and you don’t have digital models at your disposal? Don’t worry, there’s an inexpensive way to get different sounds out of the same amp: record in different rooms. Rooms with tile floors sound different from rooms with carpeted floors. Rooms that are empty have more ambiance than rooms with lots of rugs and furniture. So set up your amp in different rooms, and then set up your mic or mics with enough distance to capture some of the room sound. Your guitar tracks will each sound different, even using the same guitar and amp.
