Round Wound

When dealing with guitar strings, “round wound” refers to the type of winding used to manufacture the string. Wire is tightly wrapped around the core of the string to produce a slightly bumpy exterior of uniform wraps that run the length of the string. Round wound strings are found on most acoustic and electric guitars, as well as electric basses, and produce a bright, punchy sound. The wraps on round wound strings can cause a high-pitched squeak, known as string noise, when changing positions on the neck of the guitar.
