Propellerhead Software today announced the discontinuation of all development and support of ReBirth, the very first software synth emulation software. That’s the bad news. Now the good news: this legendary product will now be available for free, so there’s definitely cause for celebration. In addition, Propellerhead Software is creating a dedicated website for ReBirth. The site will include articles, interviews, historical information, the ReBirth song and Mod archives, a discussion forum, downloads of ReBirth 2.0.1, and more.
Want more good news? Who doesn’t? Registered ReBirth users can upgrade to Reason 3 at a very attractive price. In addition, the free ReBirth RB388 ReFill is available for download for all current Reason users. This ReFill comes with Combinator patches that recreate the 808 and 909 drum machines in ReBirth, including the most popular mods.
ReBirth was released about ten years ago, and in this industry, a decade is a long time for a product to remain viable. This is testimony to the Propellerhead team in Stockholm, Sweden. ReBirth essentially pioneered the concept of the virtual instrument. If it weren’t for this venerable product, the face of music technology today would certainly be quite different!
