Falling under the category of, “Hey, that’s what they’re for” an inSync reader inquires about the use of powered monitors.
“I have a K2500 and have been using headphones with it for monitoring purposes. I am interested in hooking up to speakers so I am no longer restricted by the headphones. Instead of buying a keyboard is it possible to plug directly into a pair of powered monitors. I’d prefer this to a keyboard amp due to the increased clarity of the sound but am concerned about damaging the powered speakers.”
You will not damage powered speakers by plugging them directly into your K2500 as long as you don’t turn it up too loud. Some powered speakers have an input level control, which for your setup would be a good thing. Many powered monitors do not have one and for you this would mean controlling (containing) your volume from the master volume of the K2500. That will work okay, but the Signal to Noise ratio can become degraded if you have to turn it down too much.
