Every serious studio needs a limiter, particularly when it comes time to create your final master. Now McDSP, a company that specializes in creating world-class plug-ins, has announced the ML4000, a high-resolution limiter designed for music, mastering, post, and even live sound, in both single- and multi-band configurations. The single-band configuration, known as the ML1, is a mastering limiter with a brick-wall design that’s coupled to multiple stages of limiting for superior peak detection. A continuous Knee control allows the ML1 to operate as transparently or as aggressively as the user chooses, and it can operate in look-ahead as well as zero-latency modes. The ML4 multi-band configuration is a 4-band gate, expander (upward or downward), and compressor fed into the same limiter algorithm found in the ML1. Each of the four bands of processing can be configured separately or linked together. Steep 24dB/oct crossover filters minimize signal leakage into the adjacent bands.
McDSP plans to ship the ML4000 in July of 2006 with a retail price of $495. The ML4000 package will also be available in the Emerald Pack HD ($2695) and Emerald Pack Native ($1395) plug-in bundles. If you’re an existing Emerald Pack customer, you can purchase the ML4000 as an upgrade for $295.
