In the Press – Lexicon 960L
Producer Brian Ahern’s lengthy credit list includes timeless recordings from such legends as Anne Murray, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, and George Jones. Ahern has developed a real affection for his Lexicon 960L because, as he puts it, “When you work with real people playing real instruments in real rooms, the 960L has processing that sounds just as real as the rest of the music.”
Most recently, at his Easter Island Surround Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, Ahern completed a 14-song retrospective of Emmylou Harris remixed in 5.1 surround, entitled Producer’s Cut. “The 960L sounded elegant,” stated Ahern. The 960L will be featured again when he begins work later this year on a surround remix of a classic Johnny Cash recording called “Silver,” made during Cash’s 25th year in the studio. After that, Ahern will commence a new Emmylou Harris project, this time a bluegrass album.
“The 960L gives you a real sense of place and space,” Ahern explains. “When you hear it, you sense you’re in a real room no matter what size you choose, not something created arbitrarily by a machine.” Ahern especially likes the way the 960L handles vocals. He often uses one of the small room algorithms as the first layer of vocal reverb, followed by what he calls the “corona” of a larger room setting. “I bought it for its surround capability and functionality,” concludes Ahern, “but the bottom line is – it’s also a great-sounding reverb.”
