Importing audio into your projects from CDs at 48kHz

Q: I’m using a lot of material from CDs in a Final Cut Pro project. What’s the easiest way to import audio from CDs at 48kHz?

A: You import audio the same way you would any digital media. To import from CD, do the following:

  1. In the Finder, double-click the audio CD icon to open it, select and drag the desired .cdda audio files into your project’s media folder.
  2. Rename the files so you can remember them
  3. Follow the procedures for importing files or folders into your project or timeline.

Final Cut does do sample rate conversion in real time, but it’s not optimized for audio quality. For higher quality conversion, you can convert using the Export feature or when you render the project.

An easier method for converting audio to 48kHz on import is to use Apple’s iTunes. You can set your preferences in iTunes to convert from 44.1kHz to 48kHz as the application imports the CD audio track directly to your project’s media folder. To convert audio in iTunes, use the following steps:

  1. Open iTunes, choose iTunes > Preferences, and click on the importing icon.
  2. In the Importing pane, choose AIFF Encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu and Custom from the Setting pop-up menu.
  3. In the AIFF Encoder window, specify the following:

    Sample Rate: 48.000kHz
    Sample Size: 16 bit
    Channels: Stereo (or Auto)

  4. Click OK.
  5. Back in the Preferences window, click the Advanced icon.
  6. In the Advanced pane, the iTunes Music Folder Location field shows the currently selected folder for the CD audio you’re about to import. Click the Change button and navigate to your project’s audio media folder. Click Choose, and then click OK.
  7. . In the iTunes play list window, choose the tracks you want to import by marking their check boxes and then click the Import button.

The CD audio tracks will be converted to 48kHz and appear in the destination folder you selected in step 6, ready to import into your FCP project.

Extra tip: Don’t import audio tracks by directly dragging them from a CD into the Browser window of Final Cut Pro. Once you remove the CD from your computer, your project will no longer have access to the audio file.

Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. Select manufacturers may require that only the manufacturer’s products qualify towards the minimum purchase amount needed to be eligible for promotional financing. Otherwise, an invoice that meets the minimum purchase amount and contains at least one qualifying manufacturer product is eligible for promotional financing. No interest will be charged on promo purchase balance, and equal monthly payments are required on promo purchase until it is paid in full. The payments equal the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next whole dollar. These payments may be higher than the payments that would be required if this purchase was a non-promo purchase. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to the prior months’ rounding. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. Min Interest Charge is $2. Existing cardholders: See your credit card agreement terms. Subject to credit approval.

Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. No interest will be charged on the promo balance if you pay it off, in full, within the promo period. If you do not, interest will be charged on the promo balance from the purchase date. The required minimum monthly payments may or may not pay off the promo balance before the end of the promo period, depending on purchase amount, promo length and payment allocation. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases and, after promo period ends, to the promo balance. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. Min Interest Charge is $2. Existing cardholders: See your credit card agreement terms. Subject to credit approval.

The estimated required monthly payment shown which excludes taxes and delivery equals the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next cent. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to this rounding. These payments apply only with the financing offer shown. If you make these payments by the due date each month, you should pay off this amount financed within the promo period, if it is the only balance you are paying off. If you have other balances on your account, this payment will be added to any other minimum monthly payments.
