Hi-hat

A pair of cymbals mounted one above the other to a single stand, where the bottom cymbal is in a fixed position while the top cymbal can be moved up and down using an attached footpedal. The top cymbal may be placed in positions ranging from tightly closed against the bottom cymbal to loosely contacting the bottom cymbal in varying degrees. This allows the drummer to play articulated rhythmic patterns and to accent parts with different cymbal tonalities, from a broad “splash” to a tight “tick.”
