Hands On: iZotope RX 3

RX3Adv-xlarge

It’s always been a dream to be able to reach inside audio files and pull out the audience noises, hums, buzzes, pops, clicks, and more. A few years ago, iZotope fulfilled that dream with their amazing RX software, which was later updated to RX 2. RX allows all sorts of noise removal as well as “spectral repair,” where you can use graphical tools to “draw” and “paint” noise out of an audio file. Now, with the release of RX 3, this incredible tool is even better than before.

According to iZotope, RX 3’s user interface allows you to work up to six times faster than RX 2. There’s also a new RX file format, which saves all undo information for recall of any edit at any time. In addition to VST, VST3, Audio Units, RTAS, and AudioSuite formats, RX 3 adds support for AAX 64-bit, meaning its modules are fully compatible as plug-ins running in Avid Pro Tools 11.

There are two versions of RX 3: RX 3 and RX 3 Advanced. The latter adds two new processing modules: Dereverb, for removing reverb and ambience from tracks, and Dialogue Denoiser, which is optimized for quickly removing background noise from vocal and dialog recordings. RX 3 Advanced also includes iZotope’s awesome Insight metering suite and a variety of extended functions in the various processing modules, along with other extras. If you’re after maximum file restoration power and processing capability, Advanced is the top of the heap – but that’s not to say that RX 3 doesn’t provide plenty of power for cleaning up and reconstructing files.

RX 3 and RX 3 Advanced are far more than just run-of-the-mill noise reduction tools. They allow you to dig as deep as you want and seamlessly rescue precious tracks. The new tools are incredible and must-haves for post-production applications. RX 3 is easy and fast, yet it gives you all the control you need for detailed work. Highly recommended!
