Eventually most Mac users find themselves looking for a specific file in the List mode, rather than the Icon mode. Sometimes a file name can get quite long and the Mac will substitute a row of dots to indicate the missing words or letters. If there are lots of similar file names, an easy way to locate the one you want is by holding down the Option key, then putting the cursor on the file. Its full name will instantly appear! This will actually work in Icon mode as well, as there will still be some file names that are too long to be fully displayed.
