Reorganizing information in a formalized way, making it incomprehensible to any person or program that lacks the “key” to decoding it. Encryption is used for all sorts of transmissions where it is desirable to keep the information from being intercepted and improperly used. There are many different types of encryption in use today, which are all based on some mathematical or geometric sequence that is theoretically too complex to break (crack), with any reasonable effort using technology available at the time. Invariably along comes some technology that can break a given code, but just as frequently there’s an exponentially more complex (thus secure) form of encryption to put in place.
