The folks at PRS don’t particularly publicize this fact, but if you were to remove the back cover plate on a Santana or Santana II, you’d see a small trim pot (potentiometer) among the circuitry. It’s factory set to duplicate Carlos’s preferred tone, which actually came as a result of a broken — but then rewound — treble pickup. Turning it either clockwise or counterclockwise will slightly revoice the pickup, making it either a bit darker or just slightly brighter. Make a note of where the pot is factory set if you decide to pursue this modification so you can reset it if you don’t find either extreme offers you anything interesting. Don’t worry, as long as that’s all you do, you won’t void your warranty. Keep in mind that this won’t cause a huge change in your sound; it’s subtle, but might be exactly what you’re looking for.
