Apple announced a software update for the iPod nano and fifth generation iPod that lets customers set their own personal maximum volume limit. It also allows parents to set a maximum volume limit on their children’s iPod and lock it with a combination code. As you probably know, iPods have come under fire recently as contributing to hearing loss, though the truth of the matter is that any loud sounds (including, but not limited to, music) can damage an individual’s hearing over time. The new v1.1.1 is available immediately as a free download from the Apple site. The Volume Limit feature works with any device plugged into the iPod headphone jack as well as the iPod Radio Remote.
