Today’s tip comes from Sweetwater Technician Steve Champion: "Never NEVER disconnect or plug in a device’s SCSI cable while the power is on. Not only will this silently destroy the SCSI driver chips, it may do considerably more extensive damage to the device." – Hmm, based on today’s tip, who wants to bet us that our man Steve spent the day fixing a blown up SCSI device???
While we’re discussing SCSI: In order to change a SCSI device’s ID you must power cycle that SCSI device ("Power cycling" means to turn the power off and back on again) otherwise the device will remain set at the old address. This is true regardless of whether you’ve changed the address via hardware or software.
