Dave Smith Instruments Poly Evolver Keyboard Review

Dave Smith Instruments Poly Evolver Keyboard Review

When I first got the Poly Evolver Keyboard I couldn’t wait to open it up. I set it up and just couldn’t help myself, I could not have it set up and then sit there and read the manual. I had to start playing around with it. And I’m glad I did it this way.

The first thing I did was, yes, the “dink-dink” test. I flipped through program after program, combi after combi, bank after bank, just to see what this thing had inside. I was blown away! The Poly Evolver not only has a huge variety of sounds but the quality is also incredible. It was warm and thick yet not muddy. It had this huge analog sound as well as a very open brilliant digital air about it. After a few hours of this I started to notice something very cool: control.

Now I knew it was time to concentrate on some sounds and see how it was going to be to get in and start programing and focusing on what this thing really does. As I started twisting knobs and really playing the sounds I was sucked in by the amount of control and how easy it was to really perform on this instrument. Every sound I tried sparked a completely different creative idea. The aftertouch, mod wheel, sequencer, velocity sensitivity, and the 77 knobs and 59 switches made these sounds, as well as my creative ideas, come alive. The programs had lead synths that sounded like someone was singing, because of the amount of expression possible. Some of the combis started out sounding like a dance/club/trance beat. In real time you could start playing with the four oscillators, effects, and the sequencer, and before you new it you had created a very cool 20-minute club track that was always evolving. DJs will love the Poly Evolver.

Whether you are a guy like me turning knobs to “create” on the fly, or you’re a professional sound designer/programer going after a specific sound this will do the job quickly, easily and efficiently.

Being a professional engineer I know that whoever you are and however you are using the Poly Evolver, when you bring this into the studio the engineer will love it. The sound that comes out of the Poly Evolver Keyboard and the flexibility of the output assignments will be a joy to work with.
