Abbreviation for “Advanced Wave Memory,” which is a tone generation system developed by Yamaha, based on sampled waveforms. Unlike the sounds of their DX7, which were totally synthesized using FM (frequency modulation), AWM starts with the sound of real acoustic instruments, then provides an extensive range of tone shaping controls via envelope generators, filters, modulation (filter, amplitude and pitch) and other adjustable parameters.
