The big news of the day came from Apple‘s Steve Jobs during his keynote speech at the company’s WWDC (World-wide Developers Conference): Apple will release Intel-based computers by this time next year – apparently Apple has been secretly working on this for the past five years.
Other items from the WWDC:
- Apple previewed Tiger (OS X 10.4) running on an Intel machine.
- An Apple Developer Transition Kit will help 3rd-party manufacturers port their products to the Intel Macs
- A revolutionary code-translation application called “Rosetta” will allow PowerPC software to run on the Intel-based platform.
- The next version of OS X, codenamed “Leopard,” will be out in late 2006 or early 2007
- Apple says that Windows will be able to run on the new Macs, but OS X will not run on non-Apple Intel machines
- Microsoft announced they plan to create new versions of Office that will support both PowerPC and Intel Macs
