Prior to the breakout success of her eponymous 1988 debut album, Melissa Etheridge — the multi-hyphenate singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist — had, as a young child being raised in Leavenworth, Kansas, already identified what she would forever consider the zenith of artistic mastery: the theater. Catching televised broadcasts of Broadway performances and listening to the shows’ accompanying soundtracks were the closest she’d get to Broadway in the Big Apple for quite some time. After nearly 40 years as a platinum record–selling, Grammy Award– and Academy Award–winning multi-genre artist whose music has inspired countless scores of fans and artists alike, Melissa decided to make good on that childhood dream of being up on the Broadway stage.
