How Much Insulation for Studio Ceiling?

How Much Insulation for Studio Ceiling?

Q: I’m building out a room in my basement for a studio, and I’m using Auralex Resilient Channel to mount to layers of drywall. I was told I should stuff the space between the joists with insulation. How much should I use?

A: Congratulations on your new studio! The temptation will be to pack too much insulation into the ceiling. In order to be effective, there needs to be air space inside the insulation; this means you shouldn’t compress or smash it into the ceiling. In addition, packing in insulation can defeat the purpose because the packed insulation can actually increase resonance transfer between the ceiling drywall and the flooring above.

Fit the insulation in loosely for best results. If you use “faced” insulation battes, orient them with the paper side down.
