Abbreviation for Digital Linear Tape. DLT was developed by Digital Equipment Corporation in the early 1990’s for SCSI based data storage and retrieval. DLT uses a proprietary 1/2 inch tape cartridge that is specifically designed for the unique needs of data archival. It is capable of holding vast amounts of data (over 40 gig with compression) and supports very high transfer rates, making it a popular solution for audio and video systems where huge files need to be moved in and out of a system quickly.
