A category of electronic components characterized by some limited ability to pass electric current. A conductor obviously conducts electricity, and an insulator does not allow any electron flow. A semiconductor is somewhere in between. Transistors and diodes are examples of semiconductors. And in the case of transistors the idea is that the device’s ability to pass current is partly controlled by an external voltage source (such as an audio signal).
