Using your Mac for both music and "general purpose" applications? If so, get familiar with Apple’s Extension Manager Control Panel! We’ve found that most music software likes to have the computer to itself (at least as far as extensions go…). A variety of applications will conflict with music software, but common culprits include programs that take control of serial ports (like fax/modem and telecommunications/Internet software) – MIDI programs hate that! The solution? In our computers, we’ve created extension sets designed for general purpose work and telecommunications, as well as very stripped down, application specific sets for MIDI (separate sets for OMS and FreeMIDI), and digital audio work. While it is a minor pain switching between sets (we use Quickeys macro software to speed this) we find the extra software stability is well worth the effort… The classic line here would be "Can’t we all just get along???"
