As a follow up to our recent Tech Tip on demagnetizers, inSync reader Mike T offers the following:
Rubber coated demagnetizing wands reign supreme, but, in those situations where a wand is impractical, i.e., car or portable cassette deck where the heads are not easily accessible, the demagnetizing cassette is sometimes the ONLY option. If this is true, avoid the battery-operated, “head-only” demagnetizers…and opt for a mechanical “rolling magnet” design. This type of demagnetizing cassette demagnetizes the ENTIRE tape transport path. With the electronic type, demagnetization is limited only to the heads, and renewed and/or remaining problems of magnetic contamination are just one play away!
