Digging Deeper into Your OS X File Information

There’s a lot more to any Mac OS X file than just its name and a desktop icon. If you want more information, click on a file, then turn on Item Info in your Finder Window by pressing Command-J. This brings up its View Options in a separate window. It’s here that you can turn on the Show Item info by checking the box on the left, which adds an extra line of information below files and folders which may prove useful. For example, now you not only get a file or folder’s name, but just below it, in blue 9-point type, you can see how many items are in a particular folder, or if the file is an image, the Item Info shows its size. MP3 files show just how long the song is and so forth. If you’d like to see the item info for every window globally, you’ll need to choose the All Windows button at the top of the dialog window.
