How to restore the iPod

Follow these steps to restore iPod using the iPod Software Updater application. Note: This procedure assumes that the iPod preferences are in their default condition. This means iTunes automatically opens whenever iPod is connected to the computer with a FireWire cable.

Warning: The restore process cannot be undone and all of your data and music will be deleted. You should always keep a backup of all of your important data.

1. Connect iPod to your computer using the FireWire cable that came with iPod. iTunes 2 opens, and if necessary updates iPod with its music library and playlists. The iTunes display notifies you when the iTunes music update is complete.
2. Quit iTunes.
3. Open the iPod Software Updater application.
4. Click Restore. (In Mac OS X you may need to click the padlock and type an Admin user’s name and password first.) The iPod Software Updater application checks to see if iPod has the latest software. If it detects that your iPod is up-to-date, the Update button will be dimmed. An alert box appears to confirm you want to restore iPod.
5. Click Restore. A progress bar appears.
6. When the factory settings have been restored, unplug the FireWire cable from iPod.
7. When prompted by iPod, reconnect the FireWire cable. After iPod has turned on, and you see the message “Do not disconnect” iTunes automatically opens. Note: For iPod Software 1.0 through 1.1, when iPod is in FireWire Disk Mode a FireWire logo appears on the screen instead of the “Do not disconnect” message.
8. In the iTunes Setup Assistant window, type a name for iPod in the space provided.
9. The “Automatically update my iPod” option is selected by default. Deselect this option if you wish and click Done. The iTunes main window appears, and the download status is displayed in the iTunes display.
10. Wait until the iTunes display says the update is complete.
11. Quit iTunes.
12. Disconnect the FireWire cable from iPod. After a few moments, the Language display appears on the iPod screen.
13. Select a language.
14. Quit the iPod Software Updater application. iPod now contains the music in your iTunes music library and playlists.
How to restore iPod for Windows

Follow these steps to restore iPod using the iPod Software Updater application. Note: This procedure assumes that the iPod preferences are in their default condition. This means MUSICMATCH Jukebox automatically opens whenever iPod is connected to the computer with a FireWire cable.

Warning: The restore process cannot be undone and all of your data and music will be deleted. You should always keep a backup of all of your important data.

1. Connect iPod to your computer using the FireWire cable that came with iPod. MUSICMATCH Jukebox opens, and if necessary updates iPod with its music library and playlists. The MUSICMATCH Jukebox display notifies you when the MUSICMATCH Jukebox music update is complete.
2. Quit MUSICMATCH Jukebox.
3. Open the Updater application by selecting Updater from the iPod menu in the Start menu.
4. Click Restore. A progress bar appears.
5. When the factory settings have been restored, a message will appear on the Updater asking you to unplug the FireWire cable from iPod.
6. When prompted by iPod, reconnect the FireWire cable. iPod will load the iPod Software. This will take about a minute. When the iPod has finished loading the iPod Software Updater’s progress bar will be completely filled.
7. Click the close box in the iPod Software Updater to quit the Updater application.
8. MUSICMATCH Jukebox automatically opens.
9. In the MUSICMATCH Jukebox Device Setup window, type a name for iPod in the space provided. The “Complete library synchronization” option, Automatically synchronize on device connection are selected by default.
10. Click OK. A dialog box appears asking if you want to synchronize iPod with the library from this computer.
11. Click Yes. The download status is displayed in the MUSICMATCH Jukebox display.
12. Wait until the MUSICMATCH Jukebox display says the it is safe to disconnect iPod.
13. Quit MUSICMATCH Jukebox.
14. iPod should display the OK to disconnect message. If not, click the iPod Watcher in the system tray and select unmount.
15. Disconnect the FireWire cable from iPod. After a few moments, the Language display appears on the iPod screen.
16. Select a language.

iPod now contains the music in your MUSICMATCH Jukebox music library and playlists.
