DAE error -6042 during playback in Pro Tools.
PCI traffic is too high. This can have several causes:
* SCSI cards should be set to 10mHz or lower, Ultra mode disabled.
* Set Monitor to 256 colors or less.
* QuickPunch doubles the amount of data per voice sent over the PCI bus. Disable QuickPunch and see if the session plays back.
* Automation, especially of TDM plug-ins, requires PCI bandwidth also. Try suspending automation globally or per-track.
* On 13 slot chassis make sure the J2 jumper on the host card is spanning pins 1-2 and not 2-3. According to the PT 24/PTIII PCI expansion chassis guide this changes the clock skew of the chassis “for maximum track count on expanded PT 24 systems”. In other words, it adjusts the chassis-mac communication for better efficiency.
* B&W G3 should be running OS 8.6 with ROM 1.1.
* Disable ATI Graphics Accelerator updates.
DAE error -6042 during playback with PT|24 in a Bit 3 7-slot chassis on a G3 (beige). If the PCI Bridge chips on the Main, Host, and Controller cards are IBM 352 chips, the card order must be changed. Move the d24 audio card(s) to the other end of the chassis, for example (from low to high) DSP Farm #1, DSP Farm #2, d24 #1, d24 #2.Upgrading to the IBM 353 chips (on all 3 boards) should solve this.
DAE error -6042 or Pro Tools freezes when recording 32 dense tracks (16- & 24-bits) running PT on a SCSI accelerator card.Possibly due to a heat problem. This has been reported under the following conditions:
1) The core system is installed in a 9600 and the back cover is not in place, so the airflow kit which is fixed on this cover doesn’t work. Even if the 9600 is $B%a the cards need airflow.
2) Not enough airflow for the hard drive(s), particularly the high RPM drives like the Cheetahs.
3) ATTO card is a … model. These SCSI accelerator cards seem to be more sensitive to the heat produced in the following cases:
– When 4 or more cards are installed in the Mac
– When a lot of RAM is installed in the Mac
– When 32 dense tracks are recorded or played simultaneously.
DAE error -6042 during playback when scrolling, adjusting faders, or opening/closing Plug-In windows on a G3 (beige). This has been reported on G3’s shipped after May 98 which contain an extension named “ATI Driver Update.” Removing this extension solves this problem.
DAE error -6042 during playback, even with only 1 or 2 tracks. Have seen several instances of these errors being caused by new graphic accelerator cards by ATI. In particular, the new Exclaim and Rage cards when added to the beige G3 and non-G3 machines (9600, 9500, etc). Removing the cards resolved the issue in each case.
DAE error -6042 with cards in a Bit 3 13 slot chassis. Slot order does not seem to match slot order in expansion chassis manual. Bit 3 reversed the slot ordering in the 13-slot chassis at serial #198487 (around the middle of 1999). Check the slot labelling (silkscreened next to each slot on the main board) to verify the slot order of the chassis. In the new Chassis, the controllercard should be furthest from the power supply, then the first digi card, etc. Note: the front cover design has changed on both units to allow for easier filter change, slot order is only reversed for the 13 slot, it remains the same for the 7-slot.
DAE error -6042 or -9073 “The PCI bus is too busy for DAE to communicate reliably with the audio hardware.” while playing back audio in Pro Tools.
– Verify Adaptec Powerdomain Set Target Options (available in Powerdomain v3.0):
1. Ultra SCSI unchecked (This is checked for 20 MHz +)
2. Synchronous transfer rate from 20 to 10 MHz
3. SCSI disconnection enabled
4. Wide negotiation enabled
– Verify DAE buffer is at the correct setting for the particular card e.g.,Mix Card at 2
– Verify the Disk Cache is set to 512 or less (virtual memory off, Ram (Disk off)
– Verify drives are partitioned if they are 9 or 18 gigs
– Verify the tracks are allocated to multiple drives
– Verify drives are periodically reinitialized, not fragmented, and not near capacity
– Verify proper card configuration.

Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. Select manufacturers may require that only the manufacturer’s products qualify towards the minimum purchase amount needed to be eligible for promotional financing. Otherwise, an invoice that meets the minimum purchase amount and contains at least one qualifying manufacturer product is eligible for promotional financing. No interest will be charged on promo purchase balance, and equal monthly payments are required on promo purchase until it is paid in full. The payments equal the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next whole dollar. These payments may be higher than the payments that would be required if this purchase was a non-promo purchase. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to the prior months’ rounding. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. Min Interest Charge is $2. Existing cardholders: See your credit card agreement terms. Subject to credit approval.
Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. No interest will be charged on the promo balance if you pay it off, in full, within the promo period. If you do not, interest will be charged on the promo balance from the purchase date. The required minimum monthly payments may or may not pay off the promo balance before the end of the promo period, depending on purchase amount, promo length and payment allocation. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases and, after promo period ends, to the promo balance. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. The estimated required monthly payment shown which excludes taxes and delivery equals the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next cent. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to this rounding. These payments apply only with the financing offer shown. If you make these payments by the due date each month, you should pay off this amount financed within the promo period, if it is the only balance you are paying off. If you have other balances on your account, this payment will be added to any other minimum monthly payments.
