Defragmenting On A Windows NT Computer
From inSync reader Trajan M: “Your 8-1-97 Word of the Day was “Fragmentation”, and you recommended regular defragmentation. This is definitely a good idea. However, there is an important consideration for users of Windows NT: If you are using the FAT (File Allocation Table) file system under Windows NT, you can run a DOS, Windows, or Windows 95 defragmentation program – DON’T. Make sure you run a defrag application that is specifically meant for Windows NT. NT stores some extra information on the hard drive to get around the limitations of the FAT system; programs which directly access the hard drive, such as defragmentation programs, don’t see this information and can wipe it out, leaving NT rather confused, and causing a hassle for the user.” Thanks for the tip Trajan!
