Extremely Portable Acoustic-electric Bass

The bass you can travel with! The Kala U-Bass sets a new sonic standard for "travel-sized" instruments. It's sized to fit into the overhead compartment of an airplane, yet's it's packed with thick, rich acoustic bass tone. In fact, the U-Bass's tone comes startlingly close to that of traditional double bass - something that anyone used to lugging around an upright will love. And since this little uke-style instrument uses traditional bass tuning, there's virtually no learning curve if your used to a standard bass guitar.

Special U-Bass Strings provide deep, warm, and rich acoustic bass tone

The secret behind the big sound of the Kala U-Bass is almost as cool as its small, ultra-portable format. It comes from the combination of the right tonewoods and Kala's unique polyurethane strings. These lightweight, large-diameter string provide plenty of low frequency umph, which resonates with a deep, rich, and wooden quality that's both reminiscent of the coveted upright sound and colored with a uniquely musical U-Bass quality all of its own.

The right tonewoods bring out this U-Bass's expressive and full-bodied sound

As an acoustic instrument, another major factor in the U-Bass's tone is the selection of tonewoods Kala chose. A mahogany body, complemented by a mahogany neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and a rosewood bridge add to the vibrance of this U-Bass, giving it a warm and slightly dark (but not muddy) fundamental tone. On top of that, they gave this U-Bass a solid spruce top, which adds a touch of extra midrange definition to your tone.

Custom Kala electronics with active EQ make this U-Bass a real live performer

Introduced on the 2013 edition of the U-Bass, Kala's custom electronics give this U-Bass a vibrant and realistic sound when you play plugged in. An active equalizer lets you tweak your tone, effortlessly meeting the needs of even the most demanding venues. What's more, Kala even equipped this U-Bass with an onboard tuner - an essential part of any musicians live kit.

Wonderful tone

Portable, powerful, and light. This bass is really good, especially for jazz and early rock. Strings don't cut fingers and the mellow tone can be akin to an upright bass.

Kala U Bass

This is a great travel bass with a unique sound. When everyone else breaks out their ukuleles this is the perfect accompaniment. Stays in tune quite well and the onboard tuner is a nice touch. Feels like a quality instrument given the modest price. The only negative is the tuning pegs which should be upgraded given that this is close to the price of a Taylor GS mini.

Kala U-Bass

Very pleased with the bass, and with the Sweetwater service!

Lady perfect -

Being 60 and a woman - this U-Bass is perfect - easy to carry, tune and on the fingers. The drawback is it's not very loud, especially on the E string. Must use a bigger amp when jamming with others, but it's a small price to pay for the ease and convenience of it.

The Only Bass I'll Ever Play

When the advertisement says "upright bass sound" they aren't lying. This instrument has the incredibly deep warm tones I've been looking for but on a 21" scale length. While the small acoustic body is great for practicing by yourself, you will need a bass amplifier to truly appreciate the low end this instrument produces. The bottom E string's first 5 frets are so deep that they barely register if you run this instrument through guitar or keyboard amp that doesn't produce anything below 30Hz. I've paired my uBass with a Hartke A70 Bass Amp and am getting low end that will knock your house down. I also love the short scale length as it lets me glide quickly around and find other notes that weren't always as convenient on a 34in scale electric bass. The short scale length, however, has taken some getting used to. The shorter scale means less space between the frets and a smaller sweet spot when fretting notes. It's easy to mis-fret and get a raspy sound while you are learning your way around the uBass.Overall, this is a fun and functional instrument.
