The return of the quintessential studio bus compressor
The Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic marks the return of the quintessential studio bus compressor, designed by the original engineers. Faithful to the classic model, this unit features high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs and a unique sidechain architecture that incorporates a VCA in its feedback loop, yielding the distinctive SSL compression response. VCA Drive puts decades of SSL console coloration at your fingertips, under one continuously variable control. At its cleanest setting, the Bus Comp Classic’s VCAs operate in a balanced configuration, exhibiting the low-distortion clarity and transient response of SSL’s SuperAnalogue generation, from the 9000 Series to Oracle and Odyssey. Once activated, however, the VCAs operate unbalanced, re-creating the harmonic-laden behavior of SSL’s classic 4000 Series consoles and the FX384 compressor.

Ratio options built for every bus
Built for professional record-making, the Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic features expanded ratio options, each with its own meticulously defined behavior. 2:1 mode yields an exceptionally gentle soft-knee response that’s tailor-made for transparent mix bus processing. Conversely, higher ratios deliver more assertive control and greater density, making them ideal for stems, drum buses, and parallel chains. Additionally, the Bus Comp Classic includes SSL’s Auto Release, which leverages program-dependent, 2-stage release circuitry to recover louder material quickly and quieter material gradually. You also get a 6-way Sidechain HPF control that lessens the influence of bass-heavy material on the compressor’s detector circuit, ensuring that kick drums and electric basses retain depth without driving excessive gain reduction. Finally, the Bus Comp Classic features a stereo External Sidechain input that supports creative processing and advanced stem-printing workflows, allowing a full mix to feed the sidechain while each stem passes through the audio path separately.
